Imagine Agile as a live show where the audience's reactions can shape the performance, allowing for immediate adjustments and improvisations. This continuous feedback loop enables teams to refine their work in real time, enhancing product relevance and user satisfaction. Waterfall, conversely, is akin to a rehearsed play performed without audience interaction until the final curtain—systematic, sequential, but less flexible to change once steps are underway.

Waterfall methodology is some thing like driving on a clear day, while Agile methodology enables driving on a foggy day to some extent. Under waterfall method the end position is clear and well defined and the path can be charted and predictable. Agile has more capacity to navigate a slightly fuzzy vision. You know the general direction with resonable assurance. You 'sprint' till the point you have clear visibility. Look ahead, analyse and plan your next sprint. There may be changes in the requirements due to user/client learning, a flux in technology and industry practices, or a change of stake holder, or any other unforeseen reason. Agile, as its name suggests, is better equipped to handle such situations.

Do you know everything you want in a software tool? Are all of your requirements defined up front? Do you have a pre-defined timeline? If so, then waterfall may be your approach. But few projects fall into this category.

This should not be confused with project management approaches with stages or phased approach that deliver an outcome. This stupid definition only causes very valid project management approaches to be misrepresented and does not articulate the problem of waterfall and delivery in skillset silos.

Waterfall: is linear and sequential, best for projects with well-defined goals and stable requirements, such as deploying a known solution to new users.

Agile is about empowering people to deliver as well as to encourage team work and collaboration. The approach also proves the ability to adapt to change quickly.

That 'starter' is a somewhat clueless idea of risk management in agile approaches. The key thing in agile risk management is that exposure to risk is kept to a minimum, ideally with no more than about 3 weeks' investment unvalidated by being used by the users of the system. It doesn't take much intelligence to realize that having less than 3 weeks' work at risk is a much different prospect than having over 6 months' work at risk.

This can help the team to understand their implications to the project, product, end-users, supporting infrastructure, and all other departments.

At the beginning of my exposure in Agile, I got the wrong idea of what Agile really is. We were in a project where we used sort of like a hybrid approach where it was a brownfield project. Hence the MVP scope is long because they know what they want and they want every feature to be the same as existing with enhancements and newer tech of course. In conclusion, if it’s a greenfield project go for full agile with quick MVP, release quickly and get feedback quickly. If it’s a brownfield, go for waterfall or hybrid approach(long MVP but with frequent feedback)

Core Principles of Agile: 1. Working Software Over Comprehensive Documentation: The primary measure of progress is functional software, rather than extensive documentation. 3. Responding to Change Over Following a Plan: Agile teams are prepared to adjust their plans based on feedback and changing requirements.

I would not see these as being essentially in conflict, but as two aspects of a single operational process. For example, let's assume an organization decides on a new product family and from a technical viewpoint should have a framework at its core and distinct layered service/ api based unique features/ functions. I would suggest a waterfall process for the framework, and agile for specific product features. BTW, I never see Lean get any love, it has some advantages, most especially when used to crosscut across waterfall and agile implementations.
