What are the key considerations for mangrove environmental systems analysis and modeling?
Mangroves are coastal ecosystems that provide various ecological and socio-economic benefits, such as carbon sequestration, coastal protection, biodiversity conservation, and livelihood support. However, they are also threatened by climate change, land use change, pollution, and overexploitation. To understand and manage these complex and dynamic systems, environmental systems analysis and modeling (ESAM) is a useful tool that can integrate data, knowledge, and scenarios from multiple sources and scales. In this article, we will discuss some of the key considerations for mangrove ESAM, such as data availability and quality, system boundaries and scales, model selection and validation, and stakeholder engagement and communication.
