In my experience, I believe having a good risk assessment along with a planned BCP (taking into consideration all the relevant stakeholders) should help build a better DR plan for an organisation. And i think risk should be evaluated regularly as the business evolves and moves.

Here’s how you can approach this: Know Your Critical Assets: Begin by identifying the assets that impact confidentiality, integrity, and/or availability. These can include: Patents/Copyrights Corporate Financial Data Customer Sales Information Human Resource Information Proprietary Software Scientific Research Schematics Internal Manufacturing Processes Methods for Identifying Critical Assets: Risk Assessments: Evaluate risks associated with different assets. Asset Tracking: Use service or hardware inventory to track assets.

A network disaster recovery plan includes a risk assessment, identification of critical systems, data backup strategy, clear RTO and RPO, communication procedures, a trained recovery team, comprehensive documentation, regular testing, and post-recovery evaluations. The plan ensures swift restoration of network functionality and data integrity in diverse disaster scenarios, adapting to evolving business needs and technological changes.

I would start with identifying and evaluating potential risks such as power outages, floods, fires, malware, and human errors. I can recommend using frameworks like ISO/IEC 27001 to guide your analysis, focusing on the likelihood and impact of each risk. By understanding your vulnerabilities, you can prioritize mitigation strategies and ensure robust network resilience. Based on this you can make BCP, DRP, etc. BCP = Business Continuity Plan. DRP = Disaster Recovery Plan.

Defining recovery objectives, it’s crucial to ensure they align seamlessly with the business goals and requirements. These objectives serve as a compass during the recovery process, guiding us toward restoring critical services and minimizing downtime. Here are some key considerations when aligning recovery objectives with business goals: Priority: Identify which services or systems are most critical to the business. Prioritize their recovery based on their impact on revenue, customer satisfaction, and overall operations. Recovery Time Objective (RTO): Determine the maximum acceptable downtime for each critical service. RTO represents the time within which a service must be restored after an incident.

To establish robust recovery objectives in your network disaster recovery plan, prioritize identifying the most business-critical services and systems. Use an ISMS (ISO27001) to document these objectives, ensuring they align with business goals and service level agreements (SLAs). In my experience a comprehensive documentation of the entire network is an essential element in coming up with an effective recovery plan. This documentation should include all configurations, detailed topology and list of nodes. Every time there is a change in the topology both the documentation and the recovery strategies need to be updated.

This approach ensures that your recovery strategies remain current and effective, minimizing downtime and ensuring a smooth recovery process.
