2 Cabin layout

4 Air quality

A further challenge in designing HVAC systems for AVs is to maintain the air quality in the cabin, which affects the health, well-being, and performance of the passengers and drivers. Air quality is determined by the concentration of pollutants, such as particulate matter, volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and ozone, as well as the ventilation rate, filtration efficiency, and air recirculation mode of the HVAC system. Moreover, air quality may change depending on the external sources of pollution, such as traffic, industry, or nature, as well as the internal sources, such as human respiration, body odor, or food. Therefore, HVAC systems for AVs need to be effective, robust, and reliable, using advanced filters, purifiers, and sensors to detect and remove the contaminants from the cabin air, while ensuring adequate ventilation and fresh air supply.

Moreover, noise level may be more noticeable and annoying in AVs, as the passengers and drivers may have higher expectations of silence and privacy, or may engage in more sensitive or complex tasks, such as sleeping, reading, or working. Therefore, HVAC systems for AVs need to be quiet, smooth, and discreet, using low-noise fans, compressors, and valves, as well as sound insulation and absorption materials, to minimize the acoustic impact of the HVAC system on the cabin environment.
