This reduces inventory, overproduction, waiting, and defects, which are some of the seven types of waste identified by lean principles. A pull system also empowers your employees to respond to customer needs and improve quality and efficiency. Some examples of pull systems are kanban, just-in-time, and make-to-order.

A pull system can also bring some challenges to your organization, such as increased complexity due to the need for coordination and synchronization of work processes, higher risk of supply chain disruptions or demand fluctuations, and the need for a higher investment in technology, equipment, or training. Additionally, you may face resistance from employees, suppliers, or customers who are used to a push system and fear losing control or security.

In my experience, implementing pull systems within a cell (or work group) does have challenges but the challenges of implementing this system at the cell level can easily be overcome. Cross functional pull systemsare inherently complex due most organizations being designed and segregated by functions vs. by process or delivery flow (to the client). Designing pull systems across these verticals requires horizontal mandate and collaboration - challenging to say the least.
