Every time I develop a new strategic plan with an organization, we also develop a monitoring framework that the board and leadership can use to track progress on strategic priorities. We identify the best fit metrics that speak to the priorities, and look for places where the organization is already generating that data. Sometimes organizations generate data but don't collect it formally, and in that case we develop an appropriate collection tool and integrate it into existing processes. The result is an organization that now has very helpful insight into strategic priorities, without adding significantly to their admin and reporting burden.
