What is the importance of authenticity in motivational speaking?

Authenticity is crucial in motivational speaking for several reasons: 1. Building Trust: Authenticity creates a sense of trust between the speaker and the audience. 2. Relatability: Authenticity allows the speaker to genuinely share personal experiences, struggles, and triumphs. 3. Inspiring Confidence: Authenticity inspires confidence in both the speaker and the audience. 4. Long-lasting Impact: Authentic motivational speeches resonate with people on a deeper level and have a lasting impact. Authenticity creates a memorable experience for the audience, motivating them to take action and make positive changes in their lives.

Trust is a responsibility and a commitment to your audience. When you step up to the plate of taking on such an incredible power, you take on incredible responsibility (I have to thank Stan Lee for this early life lesson). I have removed myself from positions of leadership when I knew I was not the leader needed to execute the goal. That is an example of being authentic and building trust. In the future, if I was to speak to my readiness to act in that same role, I believe they would trust my judgement then too. It is something that builds and doing your best and doing so consistently isn't the whole of earning trust, you have to own your shortcomings too. Let them see there is no such thing as perfect.

Authentic trust is not only about letting people know of my stories but also my ability to hear the story of others, their stories matter to me, and that I am able to genuinely reflect this mattering in the stories I tell and the speeches I give. I can illustrate this through the examples I give - basing it on the people and clients I encounter. This gives the listeners the sense of that it is possible to be really heard as a human being with no expected outcomes or motives, which contributes to authentic trust because we just matter as a person.

In some ways this is the single most important key to touching people's hearts in your speaking career. Stories and anecdotes must be authentic, humane and must be recounted straight from the heart. Stories of family, close friends, teachers et al are more relatable than most professional stories but those are insightful as well...

While I know my craft teaches others to share their stories in a relatable way, I cannot say I worry about my delivery half I have been told I am a natural at sharing in a relatable way. It may be some of that sales and marketing I have done, if I am honest, so let me share a few tips from that. 1. Make them remember you. My personal favorite way to accomplish that is with genuine laughter or a silly opening question like, "What is your favorite ice cream flavor and why?" It breaks the ice with a topic all can comfortably engage in without fear or imposter syndrome creating doubts. Fostering early confidence from the audience helps create energy for the whole.

Here’s a story public speakers can relate to. Recently I was scheduled to speak at a ribbon cutting where I was called to speak in English & Spanish. I’m always self conscious about my ability Spanish to primary language speakers & the public no matter how well I done at times before. I was given 2 sets of speaking points 1 day before & 1 was not translated. It was, in my mind, due to lack of preparation, one of my worse engagements with the public in both languages. Despite my feeling of anxiety the speech was received extremely well with resounding compliments. It shows that people generally WANT YOU to succeed. Relatable stories are crucial to speaking publicly and are impossible without them, in my opinion.

We all have have our own lived experiences. For example: I am Asian American women who grew up in poverty, is educated, and now have access to things that others may not have. My lived experiences both give me access to and excludes me from certain spaces and connections. So while the specifics of my life stories may not be relatable to others, there is a shared commonality: the authenticity of being human. These commonalities are the bridges that cross differences but only if we include them with genuine heartfelt connection and not just a tool to move the audience.

If done in an authentic way, absolutely. If done as a production for the purpose of selling a book, product, or service, no. It needs to be based in truth, with appropriate intentions, and with an intention to allow the listeners to garnish workable knowledge to grow from.

Yes emotions are important but it is also important to not use emotions to manipulate or to stir people up to certain actions that are not beneficial for them. In my speeches, I prefer to give the audience exercises to connect with their emotions, for them to notice what is authentically coming up for them, and for them to lean into the trust that I can hold this space for them as a motivational speaker. Because ultimately motivation is a connection to the self and if I can show them a path to that connection via an exercise, it is powerful.

Agree and I believe that integrity happens when it is in alignment with purpose: what is the purpose for giving this motivational speech? How can I sense others in a way that is within both theirs's and my own integrity? I ask myself when I create motivational speeches.

While we may all want lasting impact, the reality is that I can only show up for myself and others can only show up for themselves. There once was a time when I felt disappointed when someone did not show up to the coaching call with their "homework" but I realized this: I can only show them the possibilities of the vast and endless sea but they need to yearn for the sea so deeply that they find a way to get to the sea. I believe that humans are not made to be islands so we need to work together so when someone shows up I am appreciative and grateful. What they take with them and how long they will carry the motivation forward is partly me and mostly them because we all have different perspectives and experiences. Also it's their life.

It is my belief that we don’t determine impact directly. There are plenty of contributing factors, however, where we can increase our chances as a motivational speaker. Primarily authenticity is the game changer. Who you are & your beliefs must shine through no matter the content you deliver. People must feel your message when they hear you! This, among other things, allows you to connect with others so they can grab, understand & implement your motivational message for their breakthrough. The most effective of us set people free through them being introduced to their power - which is the only thing that ever sets a human free, in my opinion.

I will be brief, the importance of authenticity and making a lasting impact is very much connected to The integrity of the motivational speaker. Truly connecting with one’s audience, and sharing from your personal experience to empower that audience requires speaker to dig deep and be real. If a speakers experience has been difficult and they are to portray their climb or experience as if it came without obstacles or as if they were a natural success without the impact of others that speaker has failed to prepare their audience for what lies ahead.
