What higher education research skills do you need to stay current?

Searching and filtering are such important (and overlooked as important) skills! These are fundamental research skills that are iterative and must be practiced again and again until the searcher finds the most relevant resources. To search most effectively, searchers should compile an exhaustive set of keywords by consulting with knowledgeable research librarians and also being versed in that field of inquiry. Finally, searchers can confirm the completeness of their search through triangulation…that is, searching in a similar fashion across multiple databases until the same articles are found across various databases.

In addition to searching through electronic articles, I think it is important to search for "people" who have done similar works before an communicate with these individuals directly. As such communication skills must be nurtured such as listening carefully, integrating knowledge quickly, summarizing main points, and engaging in meaningful conversation.

One good way to start is to use the snowball approach. Find one good research paper or article which aligns with your interest. It is common for such papers and articles to cite other relevant works. In addition, the authors of the paper may also have published other related works.

It’s often said that a piece of literature can safe you a month of wasted effort in the lab. The literature will guide you via the gap in knowledge and where your research fits in.
