In my experience, Udemy has been an amazing platform for learning Power BI - it has clear explanations for beginners and great examples that make the learning experience quite dynamic.

Normally I wouldn’t consider programming languages like Python to be a crucial need for data visualization. But if you require a highly customized or very specifically formatted visual, these do become necessary. Apps like Power BI and Tableau can do a LOT. But I’ve had experiences where a client wanted to do something that is not possible in these apps and Python or JavaScript become the only options.

The great mistake beginners usually make is pretending to learn many programming languages without mastering absolutely nothing. If I had to pick just one tool - it would be Python. It's a great way to learn to visualise - and understand the data simultaneously. It's probably not the easiest to create beautiful visuals with it at first, but I think it's the best way to lay out solid foundations.

Figma is great for collaborations and is much easier to learn (and it’s also free!). There are plugins that allow you to create charts directly in Figma, but I usually download an SVG from Flourish or RawGraphs and edit it in the software.

When using code based software you will come to a point where you will export for postprocessing. Ideally, you export into a vector graphic format such as emf, wmf, eps, pdf or svg. These formats you can load in Inkscape which is open source and produce the final version of the figure. ggplot + Inkscape are my tools to work with when producing data visualizations.

Not everything would fit for everyone. While some may be content with excel and google sheets, some heavy business users would prefer Tableau or Power BI. People with developer background may try out Python etc as well.
