A thorough understanding of the growth habits and maintenance requirements of the plants you are specifying sounds fundamental but I see lacking in so many designs. I honestly feel it is necessary for a designer to spend a year actually building, planting, maintaining the types of landscape they wish to create. Additionally understanding all aspects of drainage and how it can relate to damage to structures and the landscape if not properly planned and executed.

IMO, 3 things. A complete survey. Hand drawing and/or drafting proficiency. An understanding that every line you place on the page - digital or IMS - represents and means something. Make sure it counts!
