What are the essential tools for CNC machine maintenance?

Ways should washed down then wiped clean as compressed air can push chips under them. Chip removal system should be cleaned periodically as well.

1. Cleaning Supplies: Brushes, compressed air, lint-free cloths. 2. Lubricants and Grease: Specified lubricants for moving parts. 3. Precision Measuring Tools: Calipers, micrometers, and dial indicators. 4. Tool Kit: Screwdrivers, wrenches, allen keys. 5. Torque Wrench: For precise tightening. 5. Replacement Parts: Belts, bearings, filters. 6. Spindle Analyzer: Checks spindle performance. 7. Diagnostic Tools: For troubleshooting electronics. 8. Coolant System Tools: pH meters, filters, pumps. 9. Alignment Tools: Laser alignment, dial indicators. 10. Safety Equipment: Gloves, safety glasses, ear protection. 11. Documentation: Manuals, and maintenance logs for reference.

In my experience, you need plenty of rags, a good air gun, squeegee for cleaning interior window, a great pair of rubber cut resistant gloves, 70% Isopropyl alcohol, degreaser "clean green" solution.

The filters are a very important part. If they don’t get changed, system pressures will be low and in extreme cases, you can damage the pumps by cavitation for dead heading them depending on system design. Keep the right sized gaskets on hand for when you are replacing filters - for a high pressure system, the o-ring or gasket may be broken when you open it up. If you don’t have them - the system will leak when you put it back together or you won’t be able to run it. It is imperative that you use the proper oils. The wrong oils will damage the system, and the will void your machine’s warranty. The other most important tool is the manual… this isn’t entirely a joke. In here it will tell you which parts items need replaced periodically.

Low pressure air can be used to blow off part locating surfaces on fixtures or clamping systems; but brushes or coolant hoses should be used to clean off the interior machining envelope. High pressure air is a great way to damage expensive linear ways and ball-screws guaranteed! I would personally reprimand an employee who used high pressure air to clean off their machine after they were properly trained not to do so.

Proper maintenance of keeping way-lube topped off daily, hydraulic fluid check maybe once or twice a month, proper concentrate held for coolant levels and maintaining the coolant reservoir free of chips. Ensure and utilize coolant skimmers to keep the coolant clean. And, a grease gun with correct nozzle for your appropriate lubrication points of your spindle chucks.

Chip conveyors are expensive and time consuming to replace, even if it slides out from under the machine. Not to mention downtime.

Coolant refractometer to check concentration of lubrication cutting coolant and a pH meter or test strips. Water is added if concentration is too high and the pH should be within 8-9 to prevent bacterial growth. For lubricating bearing an ultrasonic probe is a great way to prevent under, or over lubrication or to predict bearing failures before excessive damage occurs.

Also make sure your coolant chiller is well maintained. Coolant tank should cleaned and emptied of chips, this will keep coolant flow optimal and protect pumps and machine plumbing system healthy.

To Mark’s point above, if you do not clean out the coolant tank, where the chip conveyor often lives, the back side of the conveyor will eventually have chips pile up to it, resulting in tens of thousands of dollars in damage to replace the steel conveyor belt, or the motor, or both.

One thing I've always found helpful is have a high quality trustworthy jeweled dial indicator with a one knob friction magnetic base.

The shop should have a coaxial gage to check the spindle as well. A gage to check Chuck pressures is a must if you are a shop flying the ISO flag because often your preventative maintenance plans in the manual call for checking and recording this pressure.

Inclinometers: Usage: Inclinometers measure the tilt or angle of a surface relative to the vertical also for verifying the angular alignment of machine components.

Vibration Analyzers: Usage: Vibration analyzers measure machine vibrations to identify potential issues with rotating components. Applications: Detecting imbalance, misalignment, or wear in spindles and other rotating parts.

Lock out tag out locks and tags are a must. You will need to come up with a safe way to perform the inspections you are to do for troubleshooting. You cannot have the whole machine locked out and successfully troubleshoot… you also don’t want an operator coming up and moving axises while you are troubleshooting. A multimeter is imperative and knowing how to use it. A clamp on ammeter may be useful because nobody measures amps by disconnecting and jumpering through the meter. Insulation resistance checks require a megger - but you must know what you are doing to not break something. Knowing how to view the ladder inside of the control UI is extremely useful. Often you need a service code to be able to even look at these.

Replacement Parts: Spare parts kit: Keep essential spare parts like belts, bearings, and sensors on hand for quick replacements.

Ensure the air coming from the air compressor and supply 3 phase power is stable. Too much moisture in your supply air line can lead to ruining your machine permanently. Water can contaminate the machine’s internal lines and solenoid valves. Noisy or intermittent 3 phase power can shorten the life of CNC electrical system, servo drives, corrupt programs, etc. Even if the machine has a ups, line reactor and built in surge suppressors within the power regulators. I’ve seen it happen on Sodick AQ EDM machines (silver series) from the early 2000’s
