What are the essential skills and tools for set designers in the digital age?

1 Creativity and vision

As a set designer, you need to have a strong sense of creativity and vision to translate the script, the genre, and the director's vision into a tangible and immersive world. You need to be able to research, sketch, and develop ideas that suit the tone, theme, and period of the project. You also need to be able to communicate your vision clearly and persuasively to the production team and the stakeholders.

3 Digital and interactive skills

As a set designer, you also need to be aware of the digital and interactive opportunities and challenges that come with the advancement of technology. You need to be able to collaborate with the visual effects (VFX) team, the motion capture (MoCap) team, and the interactive media team to integrate the sets with the digital elements, such as CGI, animation, and projection. You also need to be able to use digital tools, such as Unreal Engine, Unity, and Blender, to create virtual sets, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) experiences.

4 Collaboration and communication skills
