What are the essential qualities for building a strong professional network?

I would say that developing a strong professional network requires more than just transactional interaction; instead, it calls for the often-forgotten skill of expressing gratitude. It is about recognizing the value of your network and expressing gratitude to them for their support, advice, and time. I believe that expressing gratitude regularly not only helps to strengthen connections that already exist, but it also helps to cultivate a culture of reciprocity, which in turn helps to transform your network into a place where everyone feels valued and is inspired to work together. Remember that a network built on gratitude becomes a supportive ecosystem in which each member's success is intertwined with the community's collective growth.

Connect authentically! Stand out by sharing unique insights and valuable observations. Be the one others seek for knowledge and distinct perspectives.

Networking is about finding those who share your professional interests and passions and cultivating a bond based on mutual respect and understanding. Think about how we make friends. We seek common ground, share experiences, and support each other. In the professional context, these principles still apply and often with even more force! My advice is to view networking as friendship-building, which will provide for deeper, more meaningful connections – both professionally and personally!

Be intentional, be curious, listen and give. Networking is not about who you know. It’s about who knows you and what they think of you. Done right; networking is an inspiring forever process.

Once, I found myself at a dinner table with a couple. The husband, exuding an air of self-importance, boasted about their lavish lifestyle—staying in a grand bungalow and gifting their son a whopping USD 25 million for his wedding. Meanwhile, the wife, dressed in modest attire, remained silent, visibly uncomfortable. As we inquired about their accommodations for the night, given they were away from their hometown, the husband mentioned that their students would pick them up. Why? Because crashing at their students' place was a cost-saving measure. Wait, what? There's an undeniable disparity between their extravagant claims and the reality we see. Remember, authenticity is everything. You can fool yourself, but you can never fool others

In my opinion, being authentic is probably one of the most important attributes to building a strong professional network. Be yourself and don't brag with achievements that aren't yours. Your target network will appreciate to connect with the real you and with genuine commonalities these connections will grow stronger over time, as long as you remain authentic.

I'm such a strong proponent of "putting your cards on the table" early and often (unless we're actually playing poker of course!). I attribute most of my good fortune to having been myself authentically and often, and being mindful to not waste other people's time. I train my staff to do the exact same thing, everywhere and always. For instance, if we're at a networking event and speaking to a prospective client or referral partner, we dive into our strengths and weaknesses, and our specific company culture as soon as possible. We'll be assessing the same thing on the other end to see if there's a fit. If there's no fit or alignment there, let's both move on rather than be inauthentic and try to force a square peg into a round hole!

Online, this translates to sharing your genuine opinions, experiences, and aspects of your life that reflect your true personality, rather than curating a persona that aligns with perceived expectations. In person, it's about engaging in conversations and actions that align with your beliefs and values, allowing people to see and interact with the real you.

Use the 'Count To 5' Technique! Networking can be challenging, especially for introverts who may initially feel discomfort or fear. However, being proactive is key, even for introverted individuals, to build a strong professional network. The 'count to 5' technique is a great way to prompt yourself to act swiftly. When you feel hesitation creeping in, challenge yourself to take action before reaching the count of 5, overriding fear by encouraging immediate movement. Initiating a conversation by extending your hand for a handshake and introducing yourself with a simple 'Hello, I'm [your name], it's lovely meeting you,' is a powerful yet straightforward approach.

Being proactive can be a challenge for some. Nevertheless, taking initiative and being the one actively drives to build a connection is important. If proactive communication isn't your thing, still try to push yourself out of your comfort zone. I recommend finding common ground and initiate a conversation on a topic that you and your potential new connection have in common. You can also take a first step and offer your help in case you are aware of any challenges. Ultimately, if your new connection fits your network, they will be thankful for you being proactive and reaching out first.

A key aspect of being proactive in professional networking is not only initiating contact but also maintaining it. Proactive networking goes beyond the initial introduction; it's about cultivating relationships over time. This involves regular check-ins and updates, sharing relevant information or opportunities that might interest them, and remembering key details about your contacts, such as their interests or career milestones. It's essential to balance your outreach efforts across different communication channels to suit the preferences of your contacts – some may prefer brief emails, while others might respond better to a quick message on social media or a phone call. Additionally being proactive means being a resource to your network.

This can be the most challenging aspect. Remembering to follow up with information you have promised, coffees you have agreed to have. Don’t commit to too much otherwise you will be over whelmed. I love to give feedback to other businesses as you are not attached to the product or service you see it through new eyes. It’s a joy to share information it’s free and very rewarding. Give more than you receive, it will come back to you tenfold

This! My first thought was 'give more than you take' and those words are right there in the summary. Generosity of thought and spirit. All 6 matter, but this is very important for building relationships and networks.

It's about adopting a 'give-first' approach, where the focus is on what you can offer to others rather than what you can gain. When you share your expertise, insights, or resources without expecting immediate returns, you position yourself as a valuable and supportive connection. This could be as simple as sharing an article relevant to a contact's interests, introducing two professionals who could benefit from knowing each other, or offering constructive feedback on a project. By doing so, you're not only contributing to others' growth but also establishing yourself as a knowledgeable and reliable resource in your field. Generosity also encompasses the recognition and celebration of others' successes.

This section about generosity contains some of my favorite verbs: share, celebrate, appreciate. Sharing resources is my favorite part of network building (and being human). As the brilliant Rebecca Solnit says, "Every minute of every hour of every day you are making the world, just as you are making yourself, and you might as well do it with generosity and kindness and style."

Consistency along with open honest communication has worked well for me in a service based industry. When relationships are the backbone to building a client base showing up consistently only will build trust!

The goals are determined by determination & perseverance.. so if you are looking for engaging audience to be in touch .. have knowledge sharing posts, participate in their posts & shares .. but need consistency definitely as out of sight is out of mind!

Always do what you have promised to do, nothing worse than making a bad first impression. Look for people on their own - help them to work the room by introducing them to others. It can be hard work attending your first events.

In my journey, there are many people who come and go but you will see those are consistently around and this is one of the key factors used by traditional Japanese businessmen to evaluate whether to work with you. In my experience I would say the essential qualities for building a strong professional network are a combination of some of them: Be authentic, be yourself, show off your own personality, be transparent. Be proactive, move your body, show up at meetings, conferences, industry fairs, meet new people, make friends and keep them. Be generous, this one is somehow connected to the last one. Share your expertise, volunteer wiht your skills, support others. And finally, be consistent: keep doing all this always in your career, even when you get retired.

Building network is about building reliable and dependable relationships. Trust, integrity and willingness to help and support others unconditional with genuine efforts bring both the purposefulness for oneself and respect from others. Authentic leaders are servant leaders and willing to give first.... :-)
