What are the essential differences and similarities between agile and waterfall testing?

For me the most similar is running regression test cycles in both methodologies. Regression involves retesting the software after changes are made to ensure that existing functionalities still work as intended. Moreover automated testing is often employed for regression testing in both approaches.

In simple terms, Waterfall is like following a strict recipe, while Agile is like tasting and adjusting the dish as you cook. Waterfall is straightforward: testing gets done after everything else is completed but testing a long time after development means it'll cost more to solve anomalies. Agile is more like you make a little, test a little, and then improve it. Testing happens at the same time as development: developers and testers work closely together. It's flexible so plans can change based on what’s learned during testing. Waterfall may be suitable for small projects with low uncertainty, when you can plan ahead, follow the plan, and test soon. Agile is more suitable where changes and uncertainties happen—most projects today.

Choosing Between Agile and Waterfall Testing: 1. Agile is suitable for projects with evolving or unclear requirements, while Waterfall is better suited for projects with well-defined and stable requirements. 2. If continuous customer involvement and quick feedback are essential, Agile is preferable. For projects where customer involvement can be limited until the end, Waterfall may be suitable. 3. Agile is often more suitable for large and complex projects, while Waterfall may be more straightforward for smaller projects with well-understood requirements.

We can also consider exploring hybrid approaches that combine elements of Agile and Waterfall to tailor the methodology to the specific needs of the project. Regardless of the chosen methodology, prioritize continuous improvement and learning to enhance testing practices and deliver better software. Consider external factors such as regulatory requirements, industry standards, and market dynamics when selecting a testing approach.

Waterfall is preferred when we have clear scope,fixed schedule,and defined goals and objectives. And that's when we have well defined requirements. Waterfall can be applied on construction industry but also can be used for another industry if necessary. Agile is different,from its name is clear that the work is flexible more than waterfall. Agile can be applied when we have undefined scope , like the it projects or web development projects . We can say that in agile the project get devided into phases with limited time (one week normally) called sprints,and for each sprint there is backlog which is the scope for this sprint,after each sprint we have to check the (done,in progress,notstarted) items,so we can adjust the next sprint .
