I've always been so frustrated with excess packaging when I order something online. This both takes up room in my recycling bin but also costs the company money. This is often down to not having the weights and dims of all of the SKUs sold. Once you have that, you can either use an automated packaging machine or better select which packaging media to use for each order. In my experience, the companies who automate will quickly out strip the ones who don't. With automation the cost per pick or cost per shipment can hugely reduce. Reducing the man hours required to fulfil orders and packaging in the correct size boxes are two major ROI spinners for investment. If you are a 3PL with an automated DC vs a 3PL with manual one, you should be able to offer cheaper rates, more innovative contracting and fewer mistakes, therefore winning more business!
