Low cost smart sensors have been deployed in the monitoring of traditional drainage systems, including gully pots, sewers and other piped systems. Nonetheless, their incapability to withstand severe hydrometeorological conditions serves as the main reason for the biased data and unreliable predictions.

As a consulting environmental scientist from the Chicago region, I was very pleased to see the widespread adoption of permeable pavers in Illinois! See "DuPage County Best Management Practices Manual, Practice Standard Section 3.2.2.4 PERMEABLE PAVERS" as an example. However, having moved to southern Arizona, I find that permeable pavement is NOT favored! I'm told that the dust from the desert causes plugging of the channels that carry rainwater to the groundwater. I believe this is a problem that could be solved with some creative design and engineering.

In my experience, urban stormwater management will face more difficulty in coming years from extreme rainfall events due to the climate change. Extreme rainfall events lead to more nutrient runoff, sediment contamination and sewage overflow. Decentralized solutions are more effective to manage such inconsistent volume and quality of stormwater. Use of green infrastructure like onsite submerged bioreactor at bioswales/ other stormwater drainage systems could be one of the successful steps toward urban stormwater management. It will introduce a nature-based process and enhance the scope of treatment by robust and versatile microbes from nature. The submerged bioreactor can also be operated and control by Smart sensors and controls devices.
