It's essential to recognize that the most effective strategies can vary based on the specific context and the nature of the issue at hand. Nevertheless, my three core strategies that hold broad applicability: 1. Community Engagement by actively involving community members in all facets of the collective action and promote open dialogue and the exchange of ideas. 2. Awareness Building through disseminating pertinent information and deliver capacity development resources to the community. Additionally, employ a diverse array of communication channels. 3. Solidify a Shared Vision and Goals by collaboratively craft a set of clear and attainable goals and objectives that squarely address the issue.

Build on Existing Relationships - Engage connections who already support you by inviting them to serve on a committee, in a leadership role on your campaign, or your board. 2. Expand Your Base - Forge new connections and relationships in your community by asking your board and volunteers to introduce you to their friends and contacts that have an affinity for your cause and might want to offer support. 3. Publicize Your Work - Let your community know about the good work you are doing through radio and TV spots, interviews in local publications, and live event appearances. Use all three methods for best results!

Participation goes beyond donor activation; it must include client activation. We never want to be found guilty of providing services to people. We always want to provide services with people. One non-profit I worked for started this process by adding to our advisory board a former program participant. Their voice helped us better allocate resources, craft communication, and reach marginalized communities. Having a seat at the table further empowered an at-risk community and improved the services we offered.

Consider Klanderman's model of protest (that applies to mobilizing communities). The model proposes 4 stages an individual must traverse to participate successfully: 1-Becoming part of the mobilization potential 2-Becoming target of mobilization attempts 3-Becoming motivated to participate 4-Overcoming barriers to participation. Those steps inspire a "mobilization funnel" for your organization that you can design, implement, and evaluate. NB: "Overcoming barriers to participation" is crucial but often neglected. Learn what prevents prospects from engaging (at the very last minute) and offer suitable support.
