Parents often see the same behaviors at home that are displayed at school. Having consequences aligned at home and school for behavior, both appropriate and inappropriate displayed by the child, helps the student with consistency between environments for expectations and what to expect. Be sure and let parents know we all get the plan wrong to some degree, so give themselves, and the teacher grace, when everything doesn't go exactly as planned every single day.

Encourage them to adopt a regular relaxation ritual with their children. Once they can self-regulate and co-regulate, family relationships can improve and behavioural issues soften. Finding regular time to relax together is so vital for parent and child.

Involving parents has several advantages. First it creates buy-in. It promotes social significance ensuring cultural awareness. Lastly, it creates/promotes rapport with the family. These are all things that could and do increase treatment adherence.

2 How to create behavior plans with parents?

Discussing parent wants and needs is something I do early on in my assessment. If they identify an area of need, I’ll taylor my assessment to ensure the skill parents want to work on is captured. Having the discussion early can also manage expectations. For example, I get a lot of parents who want to decrease stimming in their child. It allows me to express early that I don’t work to decrease behaviors unless they hurt someone else.

3 How to share behavior plans with parents?

Another way to involve parents in behavior plans is to share the plans with them in a clear and concise way. Teachers can use various formats and tools to share the behavior plans with parents, such as charts, graphs, checklists, calendars, or reports. Teachers can also use positive and constructive language to describe the behavior goals, expectations, and interventions, as well as the students' achievements and areas for improvement. For example, teachers can say "Your child has made great progress in following directions and completing tasks" instead of "Your child has reduced the number of times he or she gets distracted and off-task". Parents are present during the assessment, and I have a meeting to discuss the plan. All of it is information they have received except for the actual intervention recommendations. I go through everything, the assessment results, what they expressed were important skills to develop and how I integrated that into the recommendations. It shows I am listening to the family which will also increase rapport and buy-in. I also take the opportunity for parents to express any changes they would like to see in the plan and if clinically sound I will make those changes.

4 How to get feedback from parents?

A third way to involve parents in behavior plans is to get feedback from them on a regular basis. Teachers can use surveys, questionnaires, interviews, or focus groups to collect feedback from parents on the effectiveness and satisfaction of the behavior plans. Teachers can also use open-ended questions, such as "What do you think is working well for your child?" or "What do you think we can do better?" to elicit feedback from parents. By getting feedback from parents, teachers can evaluate and adjust the behavior plans as needed.

As a part of my treatment plans I always include parent training and parent involvement. This involves bi-weekly meeting where I show them what we are working on, the graphs, and they are given the opportunity to offer any feedback.
