This is so important because I have found that the clarity I have about myself as a mentee drives the quality of the mentor-mentee relationship. As such, I still assess what I want to get out of every conversation with any of my mentors. Whether I am looking for advice on a major professional decision, seeking an outside perspective on research ideas, or asking for feedback on an updated résumé, I make sure to make that clear when it comes time to scheduling a meeting with them. That way, it focuses the conversation, allowing them to provide me with more targeted feedback and providing me with more applicable insights regarding the initial ask. Over time, this can greatly enrich the mentor-mentee relationship.
