What are effective ways to communicate the importance of contingency planning to organizational leadership?

One thing which I feel would be helpful is to make the management aware of the risks which can lead to legal, compliance, financial, reputational, and business existence risks. Then involve them in formulation of policy and decide on strategic business risks which needs to be addressed. Keep them involved by reviewing and revising the risks at strategic level with changing circumstances.

In my opinion, the most effective way to communicate the important of contingency planning to the org. leaders (top management) is to make them involving in the whole process: - In the policy, the top management should be in charge of the effectiveness of the whole emergency management system/activities. This policy should be issued by the top management, also - The emergency plan should be based on the risks/incidents - which should be identified by the top management themselves. So, the top management shoud be the person who do the risk assessment. We (the emergency officers) may have an interview with the top management to help them assess the risks which cause emergency situations; and suggest them to prepare the emergency planning -

Generally, planners plan and provide expert advice. It is for leaders to make decisons. Senior leaders of public and private organisations are responsible for organisational success, development and resilience. If they are not fully involved in the process, from the very off, resilience planning is doomed. Inviting them to be part of the process is a waste of time. Its sound organisational behaviour to make them part of the process. Why? The buck stops with them. At the very least that means tarnished professional reputations. At the very worst it could mean imprisonment. Make the risks real to them. Know. Your Audience.

We must communicate at the appropriate level. Not talk over, but with, as a genuine partner in problem solving. A partner communicates simply and offers real value to improve cooperation and trust.

Leaders often have significant information locked up that takes relaxed open communication to extract. It seems to be human nature, in general, to resist sharing ideas. Setting a venue that allows a high-level of communication will likely increase engagement.

High levels of reference-able data will help decision making at all levels. Looking for ways to improve that data, or feedback, will always help improve the process. Organizations may need to take a hard look at the very sources of their data and ask: How can it be improved? How good is our data? Is there better data available? What are our options? Organizations can gain considerable traction improving service and support by evaluating their sources of data, and this may involve a wholesale change in who collects the current data, and how it is collected.

We may often become overly influenced by emotions when we are evaluating feasibility. If the process can be broken down to a more logical level, with only a dusting of emotion, the outcome will often make more sense. Here the components of the issue will be better understood in context and their value layer bare. Mapping the aspects within their applications will help with understanding, then add multiple perspectives by other experts to fine-tune.
