What are effective strategies for teaching kids about cyberbullying prevention?

An example I have seen is where a student had set their profiles to public in hopes of becoming an influencer. Unfortunately others had found it. This individual had been through so much already, none of the bullying was necessary. We took some time and placed a block on those involved and made his personal profiles private so he could create a secondary identity online for his viewers. As a teacher and professional, it is important to understand what students are striving to do in their lives. While i may disagree with career paths, it is my philosophy that you encourage them to continue down the road they want to be on. You never know what may come of it.

The first line of defense is knowing what ****cyberbullying*** actually means or implies and then taking appropriate actions! They need to be more proactive and less reactive! Using basic psychological instincts!

In our work with schools all over the U.S. using our #LifeHacks initiative we found these 3 items to be critical to helping with cyberbullying: 1. Creating a collaboration between schools, parents, students, nonprofits, businesses, faith-leaders, and other community stake holders. 2. Recognizing that there aren't two distinct groups: bullies and victims of bullies. WE ALL HAVE BEEN BULLIES in the past. 3. That cyberbullying is an adverse childhood experience and does not need to be repeated to be harmful or require action by educators. Most cyberbullying policies require "repeated" events. However, one Instagram hate post can cause devastating mental health consequences to a student victim.

Open up children to speak against any bullying and provide help wherever needed by children. Be sympathetic towards queries raised and resolve it with personal interest and love.

Teach Empathy: Highlight the impact of words, online and offline. Empower Action: Enable kids to stand against cyberbullying and seek support. Parents, teachers and all those who work with children should always give them a listening ear. Children go through a lot and little could make them lose their sanity, affecting their social and emotional well-being. It's our duty as parents and teachers to be intentionally available to listen to our children and even speak to them respectfully and responsibly.

Encourage kids to talk openly about their online experiences, both positive and negative, and assure them that they won't be judged.

It is important to educate our children on how to keep their personal information private, such as addresses, phone numbers, and passwords including their parent's information. Bullies are everywhere looking for someone to hurt and render useless. Our children should learn how to be mindful of their words and actions on the internet.

5 things to secure online usage : 1) Privacy of Personal Information: Emphasize the importance of keeping personal details like addresses, phone numbers, and passwords private to avoid vulnerabilities. 2) Consequences of Oversharing: Explain how sharing too much information can expose them to cyberbullying and other dangers. 3) Utilize Privacy Settings: Encourage the use of privacy settings on social media platforms to control who sees their information. 4) Selective Connections: Advise them to be cautious about who they accept as friends or followers online. 5) Internet as Public Space: Remind them that the internet is a public domain and should be navigated with caution.

I think it is important to make students feel as though the topic is relevant to them by giving them real-life examples of cyber bullying scenarios and ask them how they would approach it if it were them. Getting them to discuss examples with their peers is vital to make them realise that it could happen to them and what to do, and who to go to for support if it does.

Empathy is sometimes used as a tool to bully someone. The cyberbully acts like he or she is in desperate need of funds because his or her child is sick in the hospital and needs an oxygen tank. The cyberbully uses pressure and urgency tactics in order to extract funds from the victim. Not giving into emotional pressure and using your logical mind/thinking and consulting the matter with a trusted friend or family member or seeking advice before sending funds.

Empathy is putting yourself in other people's shoes. Teaching our children to be mindful of their choice of words and actions is also important to their social and emotional well-being. A child who shows empathy won't be online to verbally assault other children because he or she knows the impact of words and actions on our immediate environment.

My Eleven old son recently told me of how her classmate laughed at him over a mistake he made. I made him understand that people sometimes laugh at you not because they dislike you but because you are outstanding and it makes them uncomfortable. They therefore laugh or bully you to feel good about themselves. Brush it off and keep on. Do not allow them dim your light and don't hate them either because they just need help as they know no better way to act. Teaching a child to focus on being who they are and constantly remind themselves that no one can stop them the one the give permission to by joining them in their cyber trolls.

Anecdotes really help. When students come across stories of peers of their age and their struggles, they understand things better. Students should be made aware of the possible virtual threats and the ways to deal with those. Also, open dialogues should be encouraged between peers, teachers and students as well as parents and children to address such issues.

I think there is a prerequisite condition. Children myst be taught to listen to elders in general or at least to the parents. Then only one maybe able to teach them about ills of cyber bullying and ways of prevention of the same.
