To add to an already comprehensive answer: I find it very useful to audit the code from time to time like every 2 months or so. This helps you keep a strict eye on standards and optimizations. As new people work on code, sometimes they let go of standards and eventually you end up with a completely jerry rigged version. So when working with a team, schedule audit sessions every 2-3 months.. This also helps you and other people get more well versed with it.

Peer review often one of the most underrated function in database engineering. In one of the my previous job, we used to called it as 4 eye checks/review. Again it also depends on team dynamics and culture.

You can make it easier for everyone to talk about data with these techniques: - Get the Big Picture A good way to break the ice is to ask the business users for the five most important things they do, the five most important pieces of data, and the five most troubling data problems. - See the Data A one-page drawing of data entities will help everyone see the important pieces of data and how they relate. - Common Definitions Use a glossary to define each data entity. We have only scratched the surface. There are many data modeling techniques out there. The better you and your team learn them, the fewer data errors you will make.

It is hard to count the number of times I've realized that I was heading down the "rabbit hole". If you've discovered that you are really not heading towards the final solution, be strong enough to abandon the path that you are currently on. Start over at the beginning with the knowledge you obtained from the current path. Analyze where you veered away from the solution. Correct your assumptions and start again. Own your decisions and actions. And, above all be brave enough to seek guidance from others.
