The way I've handled this situation the most successfully has been using the direct approach. Ask what is going on. Ask prying questions. Do not accept vague answers or any answer that doesn't identify a real problem. Continue to ask until you get the root cause and then start to brain storm with ways to address the issue.

I agree that clear expectations are key to being a successful team. I have witnessed and been apart of many situations where clear expectations were not given and it led to failed tasks and disagreements between team members. Too many times people assume others know what they want accomplished, but the other parties do something they assumed was right. Communication is key and all instructions need to be clear to everyone involved.

In my experience don’t assume that someone on your team has the same vision, drive, values or skills as you. Everyone is different and there are often many roads that can lead to the same destination. The failure to succeed happens when the roles and responsibilities are not clearly defined for each team member based on their own capabilities. When roles and responsibilities are not communicated and maintained miscommunication, lack of organization and destination derailments happen.

I am a firm believer that five minds are better than one when making critical decisions. Having the perspectives of a diverse group of individuals can lead to a great outcome. Sifting through the differences between individuals and finding the similarities will create something special everytime.

It is also very important to understand where both parties are at in their careers. If one party just want a job until X happens, then they may be harder to deal with or to get buy in as they just want to keep the job long enough for whatever else they are working on happens. Mistaking someone's desire to keep a job for more than a paycheck is a huge issue that I see other managers within the automotive industry making. They think they pay is what motivates people but that's only half the equation. The best people can make it anywhere so in order to get their buy in, you have to make them feel appreciated in your actions.
