This also stem from clear boundaries. The best decisions are made in the arena, by the people who front-face with the issue and deal with its consequences. That advocates for teams having autonomy over most of their ways of working and also clarifying when it's not the case and a leader should step in. Delegation matrices or any sort of responsibility matrix, team charter or the likes should state those clearly. It's not sexy to say this, but great self-organization includes and clarify when NOT to take the decision in one's own hands and actually activate the better channel to solve for it.

3 Promote collaboration and feedback

The third step to foster autonomy and self-organization is to promote collaboration and feedback among teams and across the organization. This means that teams should work together to coordinate their activities, share their knowledge and skills, and solve problems collectively. Absolutely. When teams are truly self-organized, they take upon themselves the task of helping others solve similar problems and share their recipes and strategies. They are also curious and seek insight and learn from others when they are confronted with a difficult situation. Instead of scrambling to find the answer by themselves, they know they don't need to prove a point and gladly seek help.

The fourth step to foster autonomy and self-organization is to recognize and reward teams' achievements and contributions. This means that leaders should appreciate and celebrate teams' efforts and outcomes, and acknowledge their strengths and improvements. It's important to remember people always self-organize. It might not be around what their leaders want! But it's a natural instinct. For example, when people decide to wait for the boss to intervene, they self-organized around having someone else make a decision. They learned something that made them organize around that premise. So, be mindful of the signals you give your employees! Secondly, achieving high levels of autonomy and self-organization requires knowledge and competence. Elevating the skills of your team members is a prime strategy for harmonizing autonomy with better solutions and effective decision-making.
