What are effective strategies for addressing a lack of experience on your resume?

Having applied for more than 1,451 jobs over a short period of time (others have applied for more), I always find this question sometimes insensitive if not apathetic to the challenges of job search within the Global South (specifically). Either way, my simple practice has been: 1. Network, Volunteer, intern, and get certified to gain experience, skills, and contacts in your field. 2. Highlight achievements, quantifying them whenever possible. 3. Let your resume showcase relevant abilities, experience and transferable skills for each position. 4. Write a compelling cover letter to show why you're qualified for the position despite your inexperience. Above all, don't give up, don't lose hope. In due time, what is yours will come to you!

Connect the dots for the reader how your relevant skills are transferrable to the target role. You can even allude to the fact that the outside perspective can contribute to being an asset in the new role.

Keep a running list of the projects and activities that you do on a weekly basis. Then once per month, go back through and categorize them and see which ones would be characterized as 'transferable' skills for the role you are seeking.

Skills-based hiring is a major focal point in the current market, in an effort to reduce bias in hiring and fill gaps for high-demand positions. Incorporating relevant skills and keywords throughout the resume (NOT just in the experience section) can help you be found and taken seriously!

Something I’ve found helpful that many job seekers (especially new college graduates or students seeking an internship) don’t think of is to include projects you’ve done in a class, organization, or volunteer experience. This can include sororities or fraternities. My best advice would be to focus on the relevant work you did. For example, if you organized an event - it doesn’t matter what it is for. Tell me how many people, did you organize logistics, did you seek sponsors, etc.

Think of your volunteer work, internships as job experience. You can format them the same way and highlight with bullets what your role was, what you contributed, and what the outcome was. Use the same STAR method to show your successes. For example, instead of writing "Managed social media campaigns", you could use the STAR method and write "Managed social media campaigns (Situation) for three clients (Task), increasing their followers by 25%, engagement by 40%, and sales by 15% (Action and Result)". This way, you show off your quantifiable results and how they could benefit a potential employer.

I always advise those in the early stages of their careers or those transitioning to look out for internships and volunteer experiences. It is easy to gain technical experience from such. You can apply the experience you gain to paid roles.

You can earn keyword hits in any section of the resume — keywords in the education and training sections can help build confidence among hiring authorities that you are pursuing a career path with intention.

You should never apply for every role with a single resume. Have a resume for different areas of your practice. Ensure you tailor your resume in line with the role and job description. If you need to apply for a role, adjust and twerk it to align with the job description. This will give you better chances.

Read through 3-5 job ads you’re keen to apply for. Use certain keywords from their roles/responsibilities to add to your work experience section provided you have that skill. For example if the JD says create and manage marketing campaigns you would add to your resume “Creating and analysing campaign performance with an increase of X in ROI” etc.

Customizing your resume for each job application is a vital strategy to overcome a lack of experience. Tailor your skills, achievements, and summary to align with the employer's requirements and goals. Use the same language, keywords, and tone found in the job description and on the company's platforms. Demonstrating this level of alignment showcases your research, understanding of the employer's needs, and suitability for the role.

Use a master resume as the foundation of your job search efforts. This document should be your base and you will customize and prioritize based on the specific role you are targeting. Customization should not mean rewriting your resume or using a new resume for every role. If it does, you likely are not clear enough yet on your target and will need to do some more work honing in on the roles, titles, companies, and levels that align with your experience. The three key areas I like to focus on for customization are: 1) Your headline and subheadline 2) Your skills section 3) Experience bullets Reorder bullets to prioritize and consider starting each bullet with a keyword summarizing the content, which you can sub out to match the target.

Your resume should be flexible enough to cover 70% - 90% of the jobs you are applying for. You should just need to take a few minutes to review the job lead, cut/paste more specific skills, and send it off. Applying for jobs is a numbers game.

A gap in your resume as a fresher is okay. But don't wait for the right door to knock. Try to add an added value section: You must be proactive and focus on the career you want to achieve by taking any webinars or courses to be ahead of the competition in the market.

You should start by being upfront about your lack of experience. Don't overstate your knowledge or expertise, then. Second, regardless of your prior experiences, be prepared to begin at an entry-level position in the field you like, and last but not least, "Don't give up." Finding a job in your particular field may take some time; maintain networking, looking for employment, and honing your abilities. You'll eventually come upon the ideal job opportunity.

Functional resumes are ideal when you lack work experience. If you have a degree in a field related to your job search, lean into your coursework, projects, and knowledge. Focus your content on related experience. Minimize unrelated work experience and jargon.
