I don't recommend functional resumes, especially if used to obscure gaps in employment because: - the tactic is a well known ploy and no longer works - as such, it is now seen as a red flag by employers - functional resumes don't convert easily into an employer's online application processing auto-fill tool - functional resumes do not parse well through many Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).

Raising kids, looking after family members, pursuing education, taking a break, volunteering or whatever it is that a person is doing during an absence from employment is less and less an item of concern that a person has to "answer for" in an interview. If an employer insists on prying into these periods, that could be a red flag that the employer does not respect boundaries regarding privacy or work-life balance.
