Two very important skills a) Self work - a coach needs to do deep work on their own inner self, b) Holding space and silence. When they are coaching others, a coach should not find parallels between challenges of the person they coach and their own life/journey. Sometimes when such moments come, a coach may have this strong urge to give advice using their own examples and journeys. It's important to let the coachee find their own solutions. Secondly a coach should be able to hold Space for the person they are coaching. Sometimes holding that space means being in silence and letting the coachee introspect without the need to talk. Holding silence and space without any discomfort and awkwardness is a sign of a strong coach.

A successful coach is who can inspire other team members and teach them how to become a next coach. This quality makes someone a good coach

Trying to develop the skills listed, (that are very important) I soon realized that practice is as least as important as theory. You′ll get better with more practice and seeking more feedback.

I’m not sure I agree that networking or collaborating is necessity for all coaches. Some extremely successful, high quality coaches simply build a reputation for being really good at it and clients come to them as referrals, without them having to go and market themselves. However, generally it’s fair to say that if people don’t know you’re there, offering what you’re offering, how will they know to come to you for help, so marketing/networking etc certainly can help build a practice. And I think collaboration can be powerful. For example in my work I find that I can serve my clients better if I get the views of specialist coaches in specific areas of health.

One of the gaps in many coaching schools is the business side. Yes they teach you how to coach, but often don’t each you how to start up your business and grow it. The skills are very different. There are also costs that you will likely incur early on, and need to cover while you are building your business. Like: Business insurance. A computer. A software platform (perhaps a paid version) for any online client sessions. A way to track your progress against your strategy, performance metrics. Proper privacy compliant record keeping for client data. Bookkeeping. And if you intend to produce content like a blog or newsletter you may want a copy-writer. If you plan for these, and do some research, you’ll have fewer surprises.

It’s certainly true that many coaches are not able to continue in the role because they have not also become entrepreneurs! I think the statistics are fairly poor in regard to the number of qualified coaches who manage to actually make a living at it.

As with any other business, the business side of things needs to work. As a coach you have a business and are providing a service. Therefore, as well as great coaching skills, you also need great business skills. The most successful coaches aren't necessarily the best coaches. There are so many amazing coaches that have little or no clients because they don't have the marketing, sales and fundamental business skills to make it work. So as well as developing yourself into a great coach, also develop into a great business owner.

This part can be challenging for many coaches, including myself! Most coaches tend to be Visionaries. They like to look at the big picture and ideas more than "trivial" details like taxes?? But c'mon coaches... you know how to bring discipline to change! Sometimes growth of our business means leaning into the uncomfortable spaces.

Success as a coach hinges on mastery and purpose. Mastery involves strengthening coach muscles per ICF standards, attainable through education. Purpose, however, transcends doing – it's who you are as a coach. While competence is achievable through education, the being aspect requires a lifelong commitment. It's about perpetual presence from a place of not knowing, honoring others' innate wisdom, trusting their capacity for growth, and being actively centered on them. Exceptional coaches distinguish themselves through their being, making it an ongoing journey that elevates them from good to exceptional.

A Coach's entire being is vital in the quality of coaching they deliver. Much transference happens in the coaching process as the coachee not only receives coaching on his/her topic but also feels and senses the coach's being. They experience: - Role modeling of qualities such as flexibility, empathy, and curiosity - Being accepted and acknowledged unconditionally - The unique energy of the coach whether it's upbeat, calm, relaxed, or humorous After all, our neurons are also at work and we human species learn not only through verbal things - there are much more being transmitted via non-verbal means.

Be flexible and willing to adjust your coaching approach based on your students' needs and feedback. This adaptability allows you to tailor your coaching to each individual client. Maintain a positive outlook and believe in your students' ability to change and grow. This mindset can inspire and motivate your clients to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.

Coaching is always about the client. Always! It is never about the coach. Never! But a coach must have the requisite skills to help clients bring out the best in themselves. I have coached many coaches who had impeccable coaching credentials and on paper looked successful. Yet as coaches they absolutely struggled to make a difference for their clients. Credentials are not the answer, nor is jumping on the latest coaching fad. A successful coach has coaching in their DNA. It is reflected in how they talk, what they study, and the results that clients achieve through the facilitation of a coach.

START with the mindset and the will to help others. All else is learneable skill that takes time and practice. ALL successful coaches are at the same time the best learners.

I strongly believe that true compassion is the basis of great coaching. It's the empathetic understanding of your client's journey, emotions, and struggles. Through compassion, a coach can build a strong rapport, establish trust, and create a safe space for clients to explore their challenges. It could be as simple as listening, validating feelings, and offering support without judgment.

Anyone can be a coach but not everyone should be a coach. You must truly be driven by service to others and making an impact in people's lives. Starting a coaching business is not a quick fix or escape from the corporate world, it needs to be a true passion to be successful at it.

Care about your clients’ results. There’s a common belief that you need to detach from the result - and there’s some truth there - but caring about your clients’ success allows you to build an important bridge of trust and safety.

I will never get tired of repeating that there is no "one-size-fits-all" solution in coaching: a true coach is precisely the one who creates a "tailor-made suit" for each client! Because all companies (and the different sectors of the economy) have different realities, and within companies the employees are different from each other (culture, studies, social background)! It would be like going to the gym and receiving the same training as someone who has been bodybuilding for years... or receive the same training as those who do the downhill in Kitzbuhel... Yes: you can learn everything in life, but coaching is it's not a fallback job! It's a serious profession that requires serious, well prepared and empathic People!
