However, many successful safety managers may not have the formal education and should not be overlooked simply based on formal education. It is important to evaluate the experience, knowledge, strategy, collaborative and critical thinking skills that someone has acquired as well as how well they communicate, coach, and convey risks and mitigations to motivate others to look out for themselves, each other and the company.

In my experience a Safety Manager is responsible for a Company’s Health, Safety and Environmental Management. This is essential to the image of the company and its leadership commitment to H&S. He develops, implements, leads and promotes H&S. He needs to be emotionally intelligent and have strong communication skills to ensure even the smallest detail of information is understood and implemented accordingly. I do not like this thought process that someone must "typically have a degree or masters". We are churning out people that are book smart only. Some years of experience in the field should/must count for something too.

The question should have been industry specific to provide exact answer. However, the main responsibilities of a safer manager is to oversee and implement policies and procedures in-order to ensure a safe and compliant work environment, focusing on preventing accidents and promoting employee well-being.

A safety manager firstly cares. They genuinely care about the well being of the employees building the work. I also believe understanding the process of what your job is building, from the dirt up is paramount to being successful. The last thing is relationships, safety is a relationship based position, you are the liaison between the field and office, you're the middle man in making sure you are protecting not only the workers, but the company as well.

Getting people involved and on the journey. Safety can be seen as “just something that needs to be done” however if you can get everyone involved it becomes part of the organisational DNA. As for opportunities, I am forever looking at new and innovative ways to enhance our safety culture. Using AI is just one way to do that. After all is said and done, everybody in the organisation (up and down the chain of command) need to own the responsibility for safety. The safety manager (including internal & external auditors) can only ensure an effective safety management system is put in place.. they ultimately cannot stop accidents from happening (only reduce the likelihood of it happening), if team members do not choose to follow the safety measures/controls put in place.
