Según mi experiencia, el bibliotecario de referencia es el encargado de mostrar a los usuarios las fuentes en los temas que están investigando. El bibliotecario no necesita saber todo lo que le consultan, pero sí saber dónde pueden encontrar todo lo que le consultan. Si bien la función del bibliotecario de referencia se entiende como una actividad pasiva, en la que responde a lo que se le consulta, su labor también debe transformarse en activa entregando información o documentación antes que la pidan los usuarios. A través de los recursos que le solicitan puede determinar los patrones de temas de interés de los usuarios, establecer mecanismos de alerta y así recibir y entregar información antes que la soliciten.

2 Skills and qualifications

To become a reference librarian, you typically need a master's degree in library and information science (MLIS) from an accredited program, as well as additional education or certification in a specific type of library, such as academic, public, school, or special libraries. Reference librarians must possess knowledge of various information sources, formats, and systems, and how to access and use them. They must also be able to communicate clearly and courteously with diverse patrons, both verbally and in writing. Additionally, they must be able to analyze, synthesize, and present information in a relevant and accurate manner. Teaching and training patrons on how to use information effectively and responsibly is another important skill for reference librarians. In my experience my soft skills have been among the most valuable within the library space. Often your ability to help a library patron is limited to how effectively you are able to communicate with them and to decipher their needs. This has been especially true when dealing with younger patrons, as often they are unsure of their true needs, and you will need to conduct a mini fact-finding mission to determine what resources are best suited for them.
