What does a pilot do?

Pilots work in concert with a team of professionals within the airline environment to agree on the flight parameters. They are only one component of that team. Soon, pilots will be optional - prove me wrong. Yes, right now, it’s important to have that human element. But soon, pilots will go away. Urban air mobility is happening and those aircraft do not require human pilots. Once that business model is tested, we will see first - single pilot operations. Then pilot optional operations. Then no pilots. But the need for maintenance professionals, flight planning pros like weight and load management pros, flight superintendents (dispatchers) and others will always be needed. Pilots are at the last bastion of dominance in flight ops.

Pilots evaluate weather conditions, airspace restrictions, and aircraft performance to determine the optimal route, fuel requirements, and alternate airports. To be fair, dispatchers are key to the process; they do the lions share of the detailed planning for commercial air carriers. Both captain and dispatcher must agree the flight can be safely operated. However, the captain has the final say over the operation of the flight.

Flight operations in "5 Cs": 1. Coordination: Ensuring effective communication and collaboration 2. Compliance 3. Control: Maintaining command over the aircraft. 4. Communication: Facilitating clear and concise communication. 5. Contingency: Planning for unforeseen events or emergencies by having procedures in place.

The pilot has to shoulder all responsibilities when he decides to sign the clearance sheet. This entails dispatch, flight planning, weather monitoring, operations control, ground-to-air communications, crew integration, schedule and maintenance planning. It extends to gate allocation, slot control, air traffic control (ATC), and airport management, utilizing simulation and expert systems for handling irregular operations. The pilot has to coordinate with all departments to make sure the flight is safe and secured for take off.

The safety and security of passengers should be the top priority of any pilot. But, pilots are human beings with frailties and faults. One bad day could contribute to a disaster. But a great response could also prevent one. Pilots do not operate in a vacuum and have multiple resources at their disposal during abnormal operations and emergencies, such as their flight dispatcher, maintenance control, air traffic control and the flight attendant crew.

There are different types of operation: Airline, cargo, corporate, private, charter, etc. and each one has a different list of focus. For example, an airline will be careful to focus on efficiency, expenditure and profit where a private operation will focus more on comfort and speed. But every single operation should have Safety at the number 1 spot on their list. There are many hazards in aviation and a good pilot and cabin crew will do their very best to avoid all of them. If a hazard is unavoidable a good crew will be fully prepared to deal with it to achieve a safe outcome.

Safety... is one of the most crucial things in the aviation industry. I cannot put enough emphasis on how important safety is. The aviation industry is susceptible to all kinds of threats, which is why we keep updating with each incident that has happened in the past. Still, we aren't 100% safe; there are hopeless situations that people can abuse, but you really have to be able to think outside the box for that.

Safety 1st. It requires Knowledge, Skill and Attitude. Knowledge, you will get as long as your career progresses. Same for skill, unless you are fully dependent on Automation. Attitude though, you need to have that as a pre existing quality. Otherwise you re in the wrong place.

Throughout a pilot's career, ongoing training and certifications are essential to stay current with industry standards and advancements. It's a demanding but rewarding career for those passionate about aviation.

"The most skillful pilot had the most experience" I once read this in the FAA flight instructor handbook, and here is how to understand it. The FAA does not define the "experience", but I understand it as: "Life experiences".. where the pilot should gather all the experiences he/she had in life, and learn how to control it. Being a pilot is all about control. Control emotions, decisions, time, enviornment.. Thats also one (maybe the only) way to build soft skills..

As a career, piloting requires dedication and resilience. Pilots should focus on long-term career development, including seeking opportunities in different types of aviation sectors, which can broaden their experience and skill set.

But how to start a career, how to become a pilot? And when? I started very recently at 38, still in my theory ATPL course and I'm already so happy that I took the step. Even if you already have a previous career, a previous profession, this is the dream job. Take your time understanding your decision, understanding the job, talk with a pilot and be ready for the changes that will come to your life. Take your time to choose a school, investigate, visit them, go to a pilot career fair and keep an open mind. There are a number of possibilities and for sure there will be one that fits you. Be ready to be always learning and enjoy every step of the way, even the long study hours for your ATPL! THE SKY IS CALLING.

Don't let fear hold you back. Take risks and push yourself to the limit. 5. Stay optimistic, even when things seem negative. 6. Enjoy the journey, and embrace the hardships. 7. Help others and be the role model, you didn’t have.
