They optimize performance, handle backups, ensure security, troubleshoot issues, and maintain seamless data management. Last but not least, they should have a test environment for safe configuration changes, regularly test backups, possess critical thinking skills, and be brave enough to make decisions during disaster scenarios.

An Oracle DBA should first know how to install the Oracle software by using (OUI) > Then Create the database by using (DBCA) which is a part of the components generated when installing the Oracle software > Configure the database by using (netca, netmgr, DBCA and so on..) also generated when installing the Oracle software > Manipulate Data and Manage the database by using (SQL Developer, SQLPLUS, OEM) > Perform Backup and Recovery operations by using (RMAN) > Perform Import-export operations by using (Datapump, Oracle Loader, and so on ..) > Applying High Availability solutions by using ( Oracle "Data Guard" and Oracle "RAC") > Patch and Upgrade the Database > Applying Security and Tuning the database > Perform daily check.

From a database security perspective, an Oracle Database Administrator (DBA) needs to concentrate on the following key areas: Access Control , Encryption, Auditing and Monitoring, Patch, Management, Network Security The DBA's role in database security involves having a comprehensive understanding of regulatory and legal requirements and technical expertise. They should be capable of effectively safeguarding sensitive data while ensuring compliance with applicable laws.

Backups are the No.1 responsibility of a DBA. Ensure the data is safe. It is not enough to setup backup, it has to be regularly tested to confirm it is working. That is restore it and validate. Do this at least once or twice a year and that will give an idea of recovery time. Can't meet the recovery time objective (RTO) or recovery point objective (RPO) during the test ? Then amend the standard operating procedure to make it easier or adjust the design so these key metrics are met. If this is done, then when a real problem occurs, it's a breeze.

Oracle database administrators (DBAs), just like DBAs of other database management systems, are the guardians of the environments they look after. They keep things up and running (monitoring, performance tuning, installations and upgrades), make sure the data is safe (backups, encryption, authorisation and auditing), communicate best practices (standardisation and training) and solve problems (troubleshooting, disaster recovery). So it's not only what the name implies (meaning administration) but it's much broader than that.

The correct way to do backups with the Oracle database is by using RMAN. You can do a lot of things using rman (that you can't do easily with other ways), like encryption, compression (several levels), multiple channels, parallelism, and slicing. Using rman you can allocate channels for disk and tape. And for tape, you can work with several third-party software (like EMC Networks, Tivoli, TSM, NetBackup, and many others) directly from it. And if possible, you can use catalogs. But using it or not, you can control backup retention policies, and backup types (cumulative or incremental) and rman control the backupset lifetime. So, for Oracle database backups, use RMAN.

It is the responsibility of an Oracle DBA to make database available to the end users by configuring the necessary parameters for zero downtime. This is part of the evolving role of a DBA, gone are the days where we look after the database only, I find myself fulfilling a more SRE type role these days working with multiple technologies away from databases even although my expertise still lies at DB level

Ideally, the Operations DBA should have experience as a Consultant and/or as a Developer so that he can work with the developers to implement secure and performant code.

Drawing from my expertise, I’d like to share that an Oracle DBA’s role in development and support is pivotal. They’re instrumental in guiding database developers and users. This includes creating and modifying essential database objects using SQL and PL/SQL. Critically, they review and test database code to meet both functional and performance standards. Moreover, their skills in troubleshooting and resolving issues during development or operation are invaluable for maintaining robust database systems.

I believe having great skills in SQL helps a lot during troubleshooting of triggers and procedures. Which is key in performing some DBA roles.

In my opinion, involving a DBA since the early stages of development has several benefits, as you have greater chances to get a robust database design, with less performance issues. Creating tables, views and indexes must be a task assigned to a DBA, while the PL/SQL code from triggers, functions and stored procedures must be at least reviewed by a DBA.

A DBA Plays a critical role in managing and maintaining Oracle database systems within the organization. The main roles include (1.) Installation and configuration of the appropriate database management system that best meets the needs of the organization, (2.) They participate equally in the design and planning of the database and related database objects, (3.) Monitoring and optimizing database performance, (4.) Strong concepts surely help in quick and precise decision making. Good SQL and Pl/SQL skills, remembering and referring Data dictionary views help a lot in setting up automation during pro-active monitoring as well for problem resolution. Good practice of reviewing the logs regularly, reviewing the AWR reports is a must

There isn't a question here, lol? Learn how to understand AWR reports, its not complicated there is just a lot of info, when a problem arises an AWR will give you the info you need to tell you what was happening in the DB when the issue started.

This can include tasks such as automating database deployments, managing database infrastructure as code, and collaborating with development and operations teams to ensure smooth integration and delivery processes. The blending of Oracle DBA skills with DevOps practices helps in achieving faster and more reliable software delivery.

With Oracle databases, you can use it in several environments. From the simple one (single instances), until clusters of databases are replicated in multiple sites. And all will be the same Oracle software. So, it is important to study and understand the Oracle internals and how it works. Studying SGA, PAG, Memory Management, Database Resource Manager, Data Guard, and RAC. You you understand this you will become a relly good DBA.

Sure an Oracle DBA's job is both rewarding and challenging. One needs to be constantly on the vigil and hence should practice pro-active monitoring to the maximum in order to avoid dealing with unplanned exigencies. Hence inculcating self-discipline w.r.t regular and periodic review of the databases in terms of growth, performance and future provisioning is critical. This will help us take corrective steps in advance and hence shall tide away unplanned downtimes and ensuring high availability of the databases.

Database administration isn't everyone's cup of tea. It requires determination and analytical skills to ease our database maintenance and maintain consistent performance. Being a DBA, benefit is of knowing the system, working with different customers, understanding how the front end app architecture works and how database is involved in apps day to day functioning. Challenges include, every problem doesn't come from a DB perspective. It may be from application layer, a code change or anything that's causing the bottleneck. Often times, we get pulled to calls and start the troubleshooting starting from infra layer when issue clearly originates different. Every job is challenging and it depends how much you enjoy being in that role

Apart from Installation, Configuration, Security Implementation Error & Bug Fixes Resolution, Monitoring and Maintaining Databases Health and Performance, A DBA is also need to Perform key role for the Capacity Planning, Proactive Monitoring, A mixture of Reactive and Preventive Approaches with the ability to understand and absorbs changes for latest technological improvements.

Firstly any DBA need to have an understanding of how databases work, and also be able to trouble shoot related issues, from performance to ensuring availability at all times. Mainly the focus is on maintaining the databases, securing them, also ensuring data is stored and retrieved correctly. There is more to this topic but i believe all database systems need the mentioned points without having to be choosy of which database it is.

DBA has to assess the availability and continuity of database and evaluate performance and tuning and proactively troubleshoot issue before even occured , keep an eye on backups are ready in case needed.

A DBA has always to think ahead in time, prepare for the worst and consider all the possible scenarios all the time, never should assume anything, always confirm the information and pay attention to details.
