I don't think the manager operates the databases. That's done by his team. Also infrastructure needs updating overtime so planning for these changes to happen as transparently as possible to users of the databases is vital. Ideally as much of the ops work as possible should be automated as often it is repetitive and time consuming. So dedicating resources to these tasks is critical.

Hoy en día es muy importante saber manejar todos los motores de BD que se describen en este apartado pero también hay que saber en qué caso es idóneo utilizar una u otra herramienta de BD ya que hoy en día ante el abanico de posibilidades hay casos en que se pueden solucionar por ejemplo temas de respaldo de manera más óptima con un software tomando en consideración como primer parametro que la duración es menor en comparación a otro utilitario

Un gestor o administrador de base de datos actualmente ya no solo debe de conocer un motor de base de datos, sino la mayoría, y no solo conocerlo, dominar algunos temas al respecto, ya sea el tuneo, el rendimiento, respaldos, replicación, ETLs, gestión en la nube, arquitectura de datos, dise?o y modelado de datos, son temas que ya están dentro de las habilidades propias de un buen DBA.

In my experience, it is the first thing I focus on when being introduced to a new database. If there is no ERD available, I create one in Visio so that I can have a visual in hand to help quickly get up to speed.
