Usually the biggest challenge that you face in being a country manager is learning how to effectively communicate with home office staff and management so that they better understand the nuances and customs of the country that you are trying to be successful in. The tendency of the home office is almost always how to mandate that the local office falls 100% in line with how the home office operates. While this would seem to be the right way, it many times is the wrong way for how the target country normally functions due to its unique cultural ad business perspective. I’ve worked in the life sciences field in the U.S. and Japan since 2001. We have had some major events (we moved to the metro DC area 5 months before the 9/11 attacks). I was running a Japanese subsidiary during the 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident.
