What does a chief financial officer do?

The role of a CFO involves a range of strategic and operational responsibilities that can vary depending on the size and nature of the organization. Historically, the CFO's focus was primarily on core finance functions; nevertheless, in contemporary times, the CFO role may extend to include oversight of departments like Legal, Payroll, IT, and Supply Chain.

CFO will take significant role as an active business partner. The CFO would prepare, guide and provide conviction on executing a business’ vision through a rational investment strategy and sustainable financing, with the ultimate goal to increase the business value.

A CFO is actually the right hand of the CEO of an organization. He has to understand their needs and develop with them an appropriate language to share financial guidance and build a cash mindset/culture.

A CFO could start from Financial Account, Financial management, Financial controller and get to the top of the echelon, become a CFO. From the perspective of education a CFO could have basic education of Accounting and Finance, could be a chartered Accountant, Cost and Management Accountant, A Financial Analyst and / or a Business Management professional as well. But CFO must have a strong business acumen, with a grip of global economic indicators and foresight to assess upcoming challenges and opportunities.
