What does a board certified associate behavior analyst do?

A BcaBa is a mid-level certificate holder between RBT (registered behavior technician) and BCBA (board certified behavior analyst). Formally- it stands for Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst and the lower case ‘a’ does not detract from their incredible value. BcaBA’s follow/maintain and adhere to extremely rigorous requirements for their certificate; earning them the additional tier-level promotion in the field from an entry level interventionist or even a competent lead RBT. This is most certainly an upgrade and pay raises are warranted for those who achieve the certificate. It depends on the state/funding source. When working in Tennessee, the BCaBAs I worked with were not able to carry their own caseload, or conduct parent training without a BCBA present. However they were still able to bill for and conduct assessments and RBT supervisor independently. In Colorado, with working with Medicaid, BCaBAs are able to carry their own caseloads, but the reimbursement rates are slightly lower. Personally I think the position is great for those working towards becoming a BCBA. It allows them to get more experience conducting BCBA-duties prior to certification that companies often struggle to pay student analysts for.

A BCaBA works under the supervision of a BCBA. They may oversee the implementation of behavior treatment plans, supervise, train, and coach RBTs, and oversee the recording and collection of data. They perform many of the functions of a BCBA, but are not required to have a master's degree and are not allowed to practice independently.

Professionals certified at the BCaBA level offer behavior-analytic services and are qualified to supervise Registered Behavior Technicians

Becoming a Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA) comes with several benefits. It allows you to work in the field of applied behavior analysis (ABA) to assist individuals with behavior challenges. BCaBAs often work under the supervision of Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) and can contribute to designing and implementing behavior intervention plans. Personally I think the benefits of becoming a BCaBA does more for the company than the individual as it allows a student analyst to obtain unrestricted hours in a way that works within the business structure of an ABA company. As a BCBA that supervises BCaBAs I always mention/mildly encourage them to get their BCaBA along the way while they pursue the BCBA. It doesn’t impact or get in the way of them continuing on, but it furthers their resume while also being more enticing for companies.

You can become a BCaBA after completing a bachelor's degree - no need to get a masters. BCaBAs make about $10k more per year than RBTs, but this can go higher with more experience and responsibility. BCaBAs work under the direction and supervision of a BCBA; so if you're not as much of an independent worker or have less tolerance for ambiguity, being a BCaBA could be a better fit.

Study the task list and work closely with your BCBA mentor. From my experience, these exams tend to be more enduring than anything. I also recommend taking practice exams and using your time wisely. Take breaks, get water and move around as you practice/study and then do the same when taking the actual exam.

The biggest challenge is to ensure your clients gain life skills to self-advocate for their needs, whether via verbal or non-verbal communication, as opposed to the neuronormative approach that can lead to trauma - both the emotional impact of suppressing one’s natural state of being and opening them up to a myriad of abuse if they lose their sense of agency.

A challenge that this credential faces is the lack of recognition by insurance companies by not reimbursing at higher rate for services provided by the BCaBA, despite additional schooling and requirements needed to maintain this qualification. Many RBTs forego the additional certification as they do not monetarily gain from the credential.

Being a BCaBA is a great opportunity for many that want to work in behavioral health, but may not want to pursue a master's degree. It offers much of the same benefits as being a BCBA without very much more education. You can liken their role to that of a physician's assistant in that PA's are able to pursue their passion in a role that is helping others medically without all the requirements of becoming a physician. Some BCaBAs may go on to become a BCBA, but that is not necessarily an expectation and many are content in this unique role and have a satisfying career for many years.
