One thing that scientists and academics are afraid to talk about is entrepreneurship. It is absolutely possible to become an entrepreneur with strong academic qualifications. Getting laid off or losing a job in academia is actually an opportunity to go out on your own and finally get the freedom you have always wished for. A lot of success in research requires finding a niche and solving problems, and business is no different. Therefore, in order to harness your true research skills, you can start putting critical thinking to work and identifying practical problems that you can solve using a commercial method. Remember, you may not always find yourself working in your discipline, don't be afraid! The freedom of independence is worth it!
