Bioengineering entails the application of engineering principles to the design, development and testing of technology to help address a biological problem. Therefore it is essential to understand the basics of not only the engineering and design concepts but also the specifics of the biological problem. For example, if the bioengineering project is about developing a nasal vaccine for COVID-19, it is necessary to know the vaccine delivery platform in terms of the biomaterial but also the nature of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the mucosal immune response elicited and it's potency in blocking virus transmission.

It is always critical to breakdown the overall objective of the bioengineering project into specific aims and a have clear idea of the specific aims the bioengineer is responsible for. Taking the example of the COVID-19 vaccine above, the specific aims that will be bioengineer's responsibility would be: (i) large scale production of injection-grade vaccine antigen and its physicochemical characterization; (ii) its encapsulation into appropriate nanoliposomes; and (iii) extensive physicochemical characterization of the nanoparticulate vaccine material. When there is a clear understanding of the process, it becomes easier to provide goal-oriented feedback.

Bioengineering by its very nature is an interdisciplinary area. For successful implementation of a bioengineering project, several domain experts from engineering as well as biological disciplines need to interact productively. It is therefore essential for all the stake holders to not only understand their individual roles, but also to appreciate how their individual work fits into achieving the overall objective.

Utilising positive reinforcement in providing feedback to bioengineers involves acknowledging their achievements, focusing on strengths, providing specific and timely feedback, using encouraging language, offering growth opportunities, celebrating successes, and providing support and resources. This approach fosters a constructive and supportive environment that motivates bioengineers to excel and grow professionally. Yes, and one more thing, please be genuine whilst doing all this. Please don't use encouraging language and then get the bioengineer fired the next day. This is such an off-putting cowardly behaviour and needless to say not professional at all. If feeling insecure, up your game, & the first step is to get better at your job.
