What do you do if you're struggling to meet deadlines as a civil engineer?

There is no “struggle to meet deadlines” when you're working with activity planning, risk planning, control of critical paths, alternative plans (secondary paths considering the same final result), resource and time planning. Only those who do not PLAN will need to “struggle to meet deadlines”, otherwise, if is a Force Majeure case, there will always be a specific clause in the Contract.

It is very common to encounter such a situation. A deep analysis (within your scope and beyond) will help. Analysis should focus on two areas (which are main concerns) mainly the supply of the materials and deliverables and then followed by effective man hours put to work (manpower x no of hours). Further a call can be made whether material is sufficiently supplied on time to increase man hours (either numbers or hours). Or otherwise increase the supply of materials by adopting plan, expedite and split the supply method. One of the issue (which is never part of any syllabus) is payment to contractor, for which there many professional ways to address. I hope this will help. As a Civil Engineer, I will start planning and prepare a schedule according to the tasks I have been assigned with, I will look through the deadlines and importance of the project that requires more time and prepare my schedule accordingly. Environmental Impact Assessment: Complying with regulations and minimizing ecological harm.

This could entail assigning less important duties to other team members or postponing them. Keep in mind that not every task is equally important; some may be more aesthetically pleasing or less urgent, while others may be necessary for the project's safety or structural integrity. Setting sensible priorities will enable you to allocate your time where it is most required.

If Project is going to fail to meet the schedule then the following step should be taken as per me. 1) Shorting the all lagging activity, which is more prior to meet the time line. 2) Write this all activity ascending order of priority

To start work priorities are: 1. Make sure the sequence of a work are understood, so that there are no mistakes and rework. 2. My experience is if a construction worker does not understand the sequence of work, then a lot of time is wasted by repeating work and there will be demolition work again 3. One thing that might help is that not everyone understands the stages of work, so when the deadline arrives, before starting work, a meeting must be made and all thoughts are put together, so that in the field there is one goal.

To prioritize tasks as a struggling civil engineer, assess urgency and importance, focus on critical milestones, allocate time and resources accordingly, tackle high-priority tasks first, break down complex projects into manageable steps, and regularly reassess priorities to stay on track and meet deadlines effectively.

This openness may even result in offers of support or delays when needed, helping to control expectations. It is preferable to notify everyone in advance of any anticipated delays rather than coming as a last-minute surprise.

1)Call an internal meeting of all staff, colleagues and Department head. 2) Assigned a schedule time to speak about current progress, delay reason, Family Status, Last leave or vacation taken for each every member.

When you're working against a deadline, streamlining your workflow can really help. To save time and lessen bottlenecks, you can identify the most critical tasks and arrange them in an effective manner using time management approaches like the Critical Path Method (CPM).

Considering all the meeting points, We should discuss any shortest path to achieve the schedule time line. It may be to adopt some technology, Some machinery items to reduce the time of work , increase of manpower, Cash flow in business for smooth procurement work, Etc..

Since I have the experience of working in the field of project control, the first step is to check the existing situation and available resources. In the next step, I prepare a catch-up plan for the project and try to stick to the final project completion date by allocating the maximum resources available and increasing the working time.

Since all our developments are related to people and their behavior: In this context, I would like to highlight the FIDIC Conditions of Contract, which have become a standard for all those involved in the execution of contracts around the world in relation to many infrastructure and construction works. but we all know that construction contracts are time bombs for all parties involved, as contractors are not satisfied with the proposed profit margin in their contracts and try to cheat and gain more excess money. Therefore before signing a contract, we will have a proper time assessment for the contractors to avoid any obstacles of contract terms, so to speak, and hope that the outcome will be a win-win situation for all parties involved.

In addition to above, as a civil engineer we suffer from lack of knowledge about management and Human Resources management , I think requesting for help from Human Resources department to study the root cause of the problem,may be small change of staff or rising the spirit of competition between different departments can make a difference and accelerate the velocity of the project, Another thing is arranging overnight shift can minimise the needed time,

Continuously revisiting the PDCA cycle helps. It does not mean that once implemented first time you ignore. As a project or work progresses, changes occur so one needs to be adaptable to the changes. Often times we fall behind on deadlines because we are still falling the original plan and not accounted for any changes occurring along the way. This is why the Plan, do, check, act, cycle should be a fluid tool.
