But what can you do about it? The most important step is to only focus on markets that value your writing. The sad truth is that some industries don't care about quality. All the want is words that feed the search engines. It might be best to specialize in a specific niche. Become the go-to person in one industry. You build up your network and create a reputation in a smaller pool. While this step may seem risky, it's much harder to get work as a general writer. It's easier to become an expert in one market. You can build your whole portfolio around it.

Write for yourself first and foremost, others might come along for the ride and you may resonate with some but don't buy into the trends at the time either.

This should be number one on the list. Always update your portfolio and resume. If you were to pitch for a job right now, ask yourself how recent are the samples you will attach in your proposal? Publish a new article or blog post when there are no jobs. Publish on LinkedIn, Medium, or on your website blog every often to show your most recent mastery of the art and differentiate your tone from AI and the crowd. Writing a 1000-to-1500-word article should take you about four hours. When there are no jobs, take your time on it. Imagine you will use it as a sample in your next job search. Publishing it under your own name will not only give you a dopamine boost of productivity, but it will also keep you one step closer to landing your next job.

Anyone can Google something and rewrite it...but first hand info inspires others and that is what publishers look for. If your a mom...target parenting mags...if you like guns...write for gun mags...ect... Noone can get ahead writing if your just googling a subject and rephrasing it. AI can do that without humans.

You should not look for writing jobs. Write. Looking for writing jobs will only drain your energy. Write like you have a bonafide job. That is what will attract the right kind of opportunities to you

Clients often don't know how to differentiate between talent. So it's up to you to show your value. Also, don't get discouraged. It's not an easy time. We are all adapting to the changes. But writing has been around for thousands of years. It's not going anywhere soon.

Consider jobs that include writing/communications as part of the responsibilities. You will gain experience in that subject, which helps your writing skills.
