What do you do if you're struggling to connect with colleagues in a virtual work environment?

My current role is fully remote, and we are from all around the globe. And it is amazing. Even though it is virtual, who knows, we might have the opportunity to meet in the future. When I joined, I initiated online meetings with the team; of course, our camera is always on. These meetings help to create stronger engagement and to get to know each other better. If we do not talk for about a week, I check in on them to see if they are doing well, if I can support them in any way. For our meetings, I create colorful and informative invitation photos, and always mention that they should feel free to bring their coffee. I believe we are doing well, and I am really happy with the team. I hope they feel the same way :-)

I enjoy virtual coffee dates with colleagues, potential clients and other connections in my network. I have a cute pastry and coffee delivered to them timed to just before the meeting starts and it never missed. They come into the meeting happy and more relaxed.

Virtual work environment isn’t really exciting anymore. Even when working remotely, on virtual working, we still need to stay connected with people, colleagues, and associates. Keep a steady virtual meeting schedule with team members, and associates. Virtual meetings can be about review, exchange or updates or even learning. Stay connected on virtual events, lunch breaks, and other occasions for virtual social celebrations.

The virtual coffee is not really a way to move on to connect. The best would be to find a topic to discuss, not related to the job. Sometimes is cycling, sometimes is about kids. You can open further conversations and connect better. This could fit better at the beginning or end of a meeting.

One thing I have found helpful is to start virtual meetings and collaborative workday sessions by starting with lite anecdotal conversations instead of leaping to the agenda. Also interim breaks are important allowing all participants to get to say their varied thoughts while continuing to keep the focus on the task and outcomes is important. I always summarize the come back to focus after a coffee break to get everyone back on the same page.

One thing I've found helpful is to always remember that people like to hear themselves talking ?? very often, it is enough to just listen for the other person to then say: "it was really great having spoken to you" (even though you barely said anything, if course)

I genuinely believe in team-building activities and informal virtual hangouts to foster camaraderie. Consistent communication through different channels like messaging apps and email can also help. Always be open and approachable, sometimes a simple 'how are you?' can go a long way in building rapport.

Set up a mutually agreeable time for a virtual coffee. During this meeting, strive to make the meeting more about the other person; ask about their work, and experiences, as well as inquiring about how you can help them.

I tend to use Teams Instant Messaging. I have asked my teammates to view it as me "popping into their office". On the bright side, I can ask my question or share information immediately without interrupting my coworkers - on the downside I don't always get a prompt response. Effective communication requires effort on the part of everyone involved. Remote AND on-site workers to be as responsive as possible. Like anything else, it is as easy/successful or painful/challenging as people choose to make it.

Como en todo, el respeto es básico en estas situaciones. De igual forma que en el entorno presencial, debemos mantener las buenas costumbres y educación con los demás. En muchos casos es necesario mantener la cámara encendida por lo cual nuestra imagen debe ser impecable, no solo de nuestra presentación física sino del lugar en el que nos encontramos. Mantener el micrófono habilitado únicamente para cuando me han dado la palabra y voy a hablar, evitar ruidos externos e interrupciones innecesarias. Además ser colaborativos y empáticos con quienes tienen menos experiencia en entornos virtuales, será de gran ayuda en el trabajo virtual.

As we all know, we are in the digital era but engaging the audience virtually is quite a task. So, if we follow these top 3 things I wish we can have interesting or successful virtual meetings. #1. Meeting agenda should be interesting #2. Host should be super active and interactive #3. If meeting topic is bit boring, host should focus to share some real time experiences for better understanding and this way we can hold the audience.
