What do you do if you're struggling to build confidence in your Machine Learning expertise?

This is the so-called "imposter syndrome." Sometimes it manifests itself not only when you have just entered a new field, but even if you have been working in it for a long time. You need to not only learn, but also repeat the basics, spend enough time on this to be confident in what you know. Learn something new in the field in which you work, for ML there are many sources for repetition and learning new things.

Machine learning is a rapidly evolving field, and in case of a lack of confidence, try to gain knowledge about the state-of-the-art tools and technologies through trainings, research blogs, and papers. Seek guidance from experts and learn from them, so you should always be a continuous learner. Always make sure to set a perfect foundation for your basics especially fundamental algorithms and programming languages. In any area of programming, not only in ML, practice is the main thing. When you are solving a problem, it is better not to use copy-paste, but to try to write sections of the code yourself, even if you peek at it somewhere. It really depends on what your goal is. If you want to be a ML Engineering, practicing model building from scratch, participating in hackathons or Kaggle competitions would definitely help you. But if you want to excel in Product Management, you need a different flavor of learning altogether. You still should be able to understand the basics and if you are hands-on nothing better than that. Being a Product Manager, you should be able to answer what to use, when to use, where to use, and let 'how to use' taken care of by the engineers.

Creating your own projects for practice is quite a difficult task. And the difficulty comes from the fact that you simply may not know what problem can be solved. You can use kaggle and huggingface to search for these tasks. There are quite a lot of datasets with descriptions and tasks as such. Try to take the problem formulation from there and solve it using some of your own methods. This is quite good practice and will help you assert yourself and verify your knowledge, and perhaps learn something new.

Learning by mistakes is the best learning I think. I always say yes for those projects also that are only 50% familiar to me and remaining, I just google it up. Machine learning is evolving daily so better to practice likewise to stay confident in your skills. Moreover, you can showcase your skills with your completed projects.

In fact be open to learn from the audience as well. A lot of times the learners come up with amazing inputs which benefits the trainer. One more amazing outcome of teaching is that it makes you a confident speaker. This prepares you well for any talks, corporate presentations and even for job interviews. This actually applies to every field and domain and isn't specific to ML. :)

Everything is quite simple here. To track your progress, simply write down what tasks you solved. And it’s better to describe this in more detail, dividing it into micro-tasks and describing how you solved them. And you can do this in any way convenient for you, even with a pen in a notebook. In the future, this will also help you during an interview, when you are asked about what you can do. You just remember what and how you did.
