What do you do if you're struggling to brainstorm creative ideas in film production?

Do something outside of film. Read a book, go to the symphony, explore a new community, and immerse yourself in a culture different than your own. What makes a filmmaker unique is their perspective on the world around them and the alchemy of experiences that formulate in their head. Without living a full life, it is so difficult to channel creativity and find inspiration. Get out into the world and discover the things outside of filmmaking that speak to your soul and bring you joy. When you've collected enough of those things, creative inspiration will strike much more often.

Engage in activities that inspire you, like reading diverse materials, watching films outside your genre, or exploring nature. Collaborating with others can also spark new ideas through brainstorming sessions or seeking feedback. Remember to stay open-minded, experiment with different approaches, and embrace failure as a part of the creative process. Creativity is majorly inspired by varied experiences and perspectives, so be patient and keep trying!

As a filmmaker, finding your core purpose is crucial when feeling creatively blocked. So go for it!

Don't just consume media in your genre - explore wildly different films, books, art, music, anything that can expose you to novel perspectives. Watch documentaries on niche subcultures. Talk to people with lives unlike your own and really listen to their stories. Visit locations far outside your comfort zone. The tiniest random detail you uncover could catalyze an entire concept for your film.

This diversity of impressions enriches your creative arsenal, deepens your knowledge and sharpens your ability to create original and resonant works.

It's in the alone times, when you're just sitting in a room staring at a screen that you can become blocked, but not in production. In this case, go for a walk or a run. Take a shower (the Sorkin Method). Or call a peer and talk through the ideas you have to spark something new.

When you find yourself spinning your creative wheels alone, collaborating with others can be an electrifying jolt to your process. Invite fresh voices from diverse backgrounds - different cultures, professions, age groups - anyone who can inject new perspectives. An animator's visual intuitions could spark your cinematography. A chef's expertise in crafting multi-sensory experiences may influence your production design. Don't just surround yourself with like-minded filmmakers. The most revelatory ideas often arise from clashing worldviews. Purposefully seek out collaborators who will challenge your assumptions and biases. An interdisciplinary podcast collective or online forum can expose you to conceptual approaches you'd never considered

In my experience, this has been by far the best way to overcome those stumbling blocks in my story development process in film production. When you brainstorm with other creatives or artists this not only helps move you out of your rut, but it also often inspires new ideas you'd have otherwise never thought of. You get a different perspective too. It's crucial to have a safe space where everyone can freely and authentically express your ideas, with the understanding that in a creative, collaborative environment some ideas will be loved and others not. This way, you feel comfortable voicing your thoughts and ideas, or concerns and even sharing personal stories and anecdotes, until that one idea or pitch takes.

Counterintuitively, sometimes the best way to unleash new creative ideas is to temporarily walk away from the problem entirely. When you're banging your head against the wall, step back and give your overworked brain a respite. Go for a long walk and let your mind wander. Take a hot shower and get lost in the white noise. Listen to an album that transports you. Read fiction in a totally different genre. Meditate and clear your mental canvas. Engage in any activity that quiets the frantic idea-grasping and simply allows you to be present. Brilliant creative breakthroughs often arrive in those incubation periods of relaxation, when the pressing weight of finding a solution is lifted.

Breaks and relaxation are essential to promote the creative process. Letting go and stepping away from the active thought process often leads to new, inspiring insights. Physical activity, meditation, listening to music or playing games are just a few ways to calm the mind and activate the creative subconscious at the same time. These activities not only help to reduce stress and replenish mental energy, but also create fertile ground for spontaneous ideas. The approach of "sleeping on ideas" also makes it possible to look at problems or concepts with a fresh perspective. Such conscious breaks are strategic tools for fully utilising creative potential and arriving at extraordinary ideas and solutions.

One thing I've experienced is that doing something else entirely can spark new ideas. Completely step away from your current project for hours or a day. One of my professors used to say "Go and look at a tree". It helps to gain perspective and take in new influences. I also discovered that reading fiction is a great stimulus regarding creativity.

Experiment and have fun Finally, remember that brainstorming is not a linear or rigid process. You can experiment with different ideas, formats, styles, genres or techniques. You can also have fun and enjoy the creative journey. You don't have to stick to one idea or stick to the rules. You can mix and match, combine and contrast or twist and turn your ideas until you find the ones that work for you.

I'm a big advocate for having fun, even in work. So it goes without saying that exploring different tools and techniques, or ideas will always inspire you when you hit a wall in your filmmaking process. It's always great to follow the rules, but sometimes it's okay to deviate a little and play around with your characters, your story or the plot. Bring in some twists and turns that wouldn't be so popular or appeal to the mainstream. Mix those genres up. Maybe re-envision the format, or mix that up as well into a hybrid. The key is to try different things and have fun with it until you find your way out of that rut.

Idea Journal: Keep a log of thoughts and concepts.

Research, Research, Research! Sometimes the best inspiration comes from the real world. Research historical events, scientific discoveries, or even current events. You might find a fascinating story hiding in plain sight that can be adapted into a compelling film. Apart form this you can also collaborate with different people, brainstorm on the ideas (event the dumbest one), consider taking a small break and get back with fresher perspective. Struggling is okay untill the time you are open to coming up with some solution.
