What do you do if you're struggling to become a successful hotel general manager?

I’ve found that the best GMs are those who embrace their position by filling three distinct roles: The Hotelier, The Business Leader, and The Parent. I call this the “GM Trifecta of Success.”

Networking: Connect with industry peers, seeking advice and insights to navigate obstacles and achieve success in hotel management.

A hotel general manager needs to balance front-of-house activities, staff management, and back-end operations effectively. Identifying skill gaps and seeking resources or mentorship to strengthen those areas is wise. Self-awareness is indeed the first step towards improvement, and continuous learning is vital in the ever-evolving hospitality industry. Conducting a thorough self-assessment is crucial to determine managerial strengths and areas for improvement. Multitasking and prioritization skills are essential for managing the various responsibilities of running a hotel.

This is what I have actually done right before my first GM assignment, here you go: - Seek mentorship from experienced GMs. Ask to mirror one in your area. I actually did this at Hyatt Regency Coral Gables in Miami! - Network with other professionals in hospitality. - Identify areas you need improvement-work on these skills, Rooms, finance, revenue… - Take on additional responsibilities and projects within your hotel to gain hands-on experience in that area. - Attend workshops, seminars, and courses, in areas you need help. - Foster strong relationships with staff members and create a positive work environment to boost morale. - Implement innovative ideas. - Stay updated on industry trends. - Learn from setbacks and move on my friend!

Some practices I found greatly helpful: 1-Cross-Training- your teams will learn new skills in different departments. 2- Brainstorming sessions- discuss ideas and successes. Also. This will keep the team motivated! 3. Recognition Program- Acknowledge achievements- best motivational tool! 4. Team-Building- Organize activities to strengthen teamwork and communication. 5. Provide opportunities for growth through training and certifications and promotions. You do this - revenues will flow!

As a general manager the most important thing to note is revenue generation,profit management and maximum guest satisfaction. The ability to think outside the box and going extra mile in order to achieve excellence service delivery .

Hotels, more than any other business, remain a business of people serving people from #guests and #staff perspective, but also #profitability and #asset management serving the needs of the investors .. As long as GMs understand that the balance of these 4 key aspects cant be compromised; all those key metrics need to perform in tandem. Creating a culture where everyone knows the Balanced Score Card approach and setting measurable goals and strategies to achieve success in all these 4 areas should be the focus of any GM. Atleast this is the simple truth that I have followed and has served me and my colleagues quite well during my career.

A Hotel Profit and Loss Account can often be the cause of anxiety and confusion within Hotel? Many Hotel Managers can have their lives taken over by their weekly, monthly, or annual accounts. But, many Hotel Managers simply do not understand what a Profit and Loss Account is and they should do, before they let their career to progress… A Profit and Loss (P&L) Account shows the Net Profit or Net Loss of a Business – in our instance our Hotel. It is a regularly cited performance result for our Hotels for any particular period of time – it will often then be used for decision making. “I can or cannot do this because I made a better Net Profit than expected” … Understanding the concepts of Profit and Loss is critical.

Like shuffling a deck of cards a General Manager should manage their stakeholders with their diary to best achieve their Hotel's forecasted targets and objectives ... Give and take ... you will receive the quality you desire ... keep a long responsible relationship with as many of them as you can. Managers ... Suppliers ... Hoteliers ... Hotel Guests ... Sales and Marketeers ... Councilors ... Competitors ... Educators ... Emergency Services ... Senior Managers ... treat them as you would a family member. They are all your friends who could all provide you with favours should they want to ... should they respect you and owe you 1.

Well said Craig. In total agreement! Too often are GMs flooded with emails, business reviews, another report which no-one reads and so forth. Let’s endeavour to be present where the revenues are made, at least at peak times !

Stay close to your guests and to your community...The lobby is your office...Attend as many events as you can - theatre, opera...Have the broadest possible reading list and Eat out!
