What do you do if you're a senior data scientist trying to effectively mentor and guide junior team members?

There are a few good ways to help junior team members get the hang of things in data science. One trick is to either design a simpler dataset that's similar to the real deal or, if you can find one that already exists, use that for starters. This boosts their confidence and allows them to see what's to come. It's also important to ensure they have the right tools and resources for analysis. Breaking down big data challenges into smaller ones does wonders. I have always done this with the people I have mentored, and they have always enjoyed it. By giving them a chance to take on a big challenge one step at a time, they will learn to trust their skills and gain experience. In this way, the learning process becomes more manageable and fun.

When I give mentoring I really like working with real problems that a person faces in their daily lives. On top of this we create activities and small deliverables to evaluate in our meetings. For example: when I'm helping someone migrate to the data area, I suggest taking a problem of the day that would be solved in Excel and slowly starting to advance in Python and then evolving towards automation.

Though I am not a Senior DS, but I do mentor as well as receive mentorship. The best thing to do for a junior is to give them well defined tasks. At higher level, things are rarely rigid and well defined. This often confuses the juniors. So it can be a good option to give them well defined tasks, not explaining a lot beyond comprehensable. Once they have mastered it, the secrets could be "declassified"!

Setting clear expectations and a path to achieve the larger objectives while having milestone meetings along the way where one can give valuable feedback and set guardrails is the first step. Ensuring a clear career trajectory and empowering team members goes a long way as well.

Mentoring always becomes double sided. Be open to hear from them on their needs. Also set your expectations and direct them towards a positive growth. Nurture growth mindset both in you and your team. 1. When your team comes up with an idea, allow them to experiment with it. Experimenting always pays off in the long run, when they learn things practically. Even if you guess things will not fall in place, if you have buffer time, allow them to experiment. They will get more learning and new vision towards designing a much better system in future. 2. Be open minded and guide them towards the right direction. You should challenge them with more problem statements. But they should come up with solutions. You can guide them in making it real.

Collaborating with someone with a fresh pair of eyes, not hindered by the established way of doing things, can be really helpful in breathing new life into a project or piece of analysis. Another added benefit of listening and publicly acknowledging their help is that they feel valued as part of the team and will be motivated to continue to grow into their role, knowing that you're not going to be stealing all the credit for their good work.

You’re not going to be right 100% of the time. A great scientist is able to learn from anyone, and foster/apply ideas from anyone. It will make you a better scientist and person to listen, ask for reasoning, and teach not tell.

Data Science is such a fast moving field. I’m continually learning from other’s work, including junior team members. They might know languages or software I don’t know, like Julia or eMacs-org. They almost certainly know how to use their Mac better than I do because my native system is Unix. Just remember to be open to new knowledge and don’t continually be judging people by how well they align with your own knowledge base.

Understanding the needs of the mentee is paramount. Every person is in different stages of learning curve and their approaches are different. There is no standard approach for mentoship , it should be a personalized approach. Assess the area where they need mentorship and be honest to assess yourself if you would be able to do justice as mentor by adding value and learning from them as well. After the initial exploratory call, come up with roadmap on how you would help, resources that you can share and work that mentee needs to put in.
