number one is foundation, as an independent game developer I don't want to rely on one particular software or tool., it is about understanding the foundational concepts how to use the graphics libraries and platform bindings, it is great to use tools and software in the beginning but for the long run, we can't go with the lame knowledge of using existing tools. My great suggestion would always be learn the foundational concepts revolves around buildin' your own tools and frameworks from the scratch. number two is math skills, obviously as a developer I can't ignore math around the corner. so learn math, learn programming and code all day.

Its not always about the money. Always remember that. Alot of times, you can gain something much more valuable than money that will help you in the long run.

If I can program but I am terrible at art, I can speak with another artist and come to a mutual agreement about what is being exchanged. One can offer skill for skill, or even skills for their name in the credits or a software license for example. The exchange must be clear, concise, and a full understanding from both parties.

Iterate faster and better mechanics than spending the time to program them. If they are fun on pen and paper you can be very sure it will work in game.
