What do you do if you're seeking mentorship to advance your consulting career?

Knowing your goals will guide you towards mentors suited to support you. Reach out to former colleagues, professors, or managers who work in consulting. Once you have potential mentors in mind, research their background and expertise. Look for someone whose career path aligns with your goals and whose values resonate with you. If your initial contact is successful, discuss expectations and boundaries for the mentorship. Decide on meeting frequency, preferred communication methods, and the overall structure of the relationship.

One of the first books I've read was 'Rich Dad Poor Dad.' by Robert Kiyosaki and he rightly quoted, 'If you want to go somewhere, it is best to find someone who has already been there.' This quote has stuck with me ever since. My take on this would be little different. Evaluate few leaders with different expertise, build and maintain relationships to treat them as mentors. Identifying a mentor happened during my professional journey, once I started building relationships with colleagues. True mentor mentee relationship goes beyond professional career and mentor also becomes a go-to person even for personal /mental health.

Building a strong mentorship network can significantly accelerate your career development in consulting.

What I will suggest is If you're looking to level up in your consulting career, finding a mentor is key. Seek out seasoned pros who've been where you want to go. Reach out respectfully, expressing your admiration for their work and your hunger to learn from them. Be proactive in seeking their guidance and show you're ready to soak up their wisdom like a sponge.

Many times you can feel stuck. It’s normal, you know you should be on higher level but your surroundings can be antagonistic and extremely unhelpful. So good way is to find a mentor that can help you see situation from a different angle help you prioritise and understand what steps you need to take to get where you need to go. It’s process so be patient because this also has dependency on business cycle. Consulting is extremely linked to business cycles and it can often feel uncomfortable little bit like a sailing into head wind. You can get stuck because market can feel static and these times consultancies become very political places full of intrigues. Way to survive this chaos is to have a mentor helping you find right direction.

For younger consultants, utilize your alumni network for coffee chats. Frame it like you are looking for advice and ask about their experiences and how they got to where they are. People love talking about themselves and their story so let them have the ability to do that

The vast majority of mentor-mentee relationships are based entirely on altruistic motives. So even as a junior colleague, it's worth considering what I bring to the table. Reverse mentoring is also something to consider here (examples would be: career tips versus social media tips). In the long term, this relationship only works if both sides benefit from it: the classic win-win ;)

Mentorship can come in many forms don’t force it, the best mentoring should come naturally. I also believe in the ‘accidental mentor’ can be the best approach, someone whom you have grown close to, respect and have potentially worked alongside in the past and you know they are a great operator. Before you know it you will find yourself confiding in them and perhaps seeking advice over a coffee about a career or life decision. A good mentor will give you a frank and honest answer which may not always be what you want to hear. Being a good mentee is just as important, being able to accept constructive criticism will help you adjust to navigate life’s choices without blinkers on.

When finding a mentor for your consulting career, consider these: Make sure you both get along well and have similar values. Look for diverse perspectives. Decide if you need short or long-term help. Set clear goals and keep them private. Stay open to learning even outside mentorship.

Mentors can be met both organically (many a times we find our bosses/ senior colleagues from previous jobs becomes our mentors naturally) and by-chance (let's say we meet someone at a conference or event and hit it off from there). Whatever way we get introduced to our mentors, the key is this 'mentor-mentee' relationship should occur naturally and it may take some time to build the mutual trust. As an ex-management consultant, I can see tremendous value in seeking mentorship opportunities in advancing one's career both inside consulting and outside of it. A lot of value from mentorship comes from the mentor's own experience or from the mentor's experience with the mentee or some combination of these two.
