What do you do if you're seeking guidance in navigating your late-career professional journey?

At 37 years old, after 16 years in the Entertainment Industry, I decided to take advantage of my company’s education resources and go back to school to begin an educational journey in Human Resources. My advice? Don’t sell yourself short. If there’s a path, even an unconventional one, that could lead to greater happiness in your career, take it—no matter what stage you’re at professionally. Embrace the opportunity to grow and find fulfillment in what you do.

For me, it is all about philanthropy. Find philanthropist mentors and see what they are passionate about. They know what works and what to avoid.

I believe that mentors at every stage of life and career can be a huge game-changer for an individual. The world of work and careers has changed and so "late-career" may be 50, 60 and beyond! In this gig economy there are so many diverse options to choose what that third act or next chapter might look like. Get clear on what is lighting you up, what you want next - is it more time? something completely different? full retirement? As always seek a mentor that may have travelled the path you're looking to get on, that you connect with and that inspires you! You've got this.

Your goals come in phases and could change over time especially as you get older. With a mentor, you are able to classify these goals and get guidance. The mentor would also give you the push you need to enter the next phase. With this, you avoid that window of indecision and confusion on what to do with the extra time on your hands. It could be writing a book, teaching a class or even becoming a travel guide!

Once your goal is clear consider how you might upskill or learn new skills - this could be on the job, a training course, reading, watching courses or a range of other ways. Remember each of us learns new skills differently so one size does not fit all!

I’ve reconnected with former colleagues, forged new relationships and have been introduced to others in my field, sometimes from the most unlikely sources!

Being part of a wider network is crucial to enabling you hear about changes & trends in the industry and market place as well as learning from others in many different ways. Remember too you may have relationships that perhaps are forgotten as you navigated family but dont be afraid to reach out - check in, organise that coffee. Generally people are very open and after all if you dont hear back then you are no worse off than you were!

When we have experience to share with our networks we can be invaluable. I always take requests for conversations because you only know how you could help each other once you speak. While I can share my insights, others can share what they know. We can learn from each other. I always say nurture your networks but also remember to be open to expanding and meeting new people too!

I recently learned that you need to develop an ODD network. - Open, i.e you know people who don’t know each other. - Deep, i.e not just shallow - Diverse, i.e people with different experiences and beliefs etc. #leadernetworkdiagnostics

Be sure that anyone you seek out for financial planning/retirement planning is fully qualified so that you are getting advice from someone that will understand your risk appetite and take the time to understand your needs.

I started my ‘late career’ journey 10 years ago when I decided to become an entrepreneur— it’s just now a decade later I’m able to bring this legacy to life.
