I’ve always searched out mentors for growing my company. I’ve used local business owners that I admired who I found on social media, SCORE, and the local Economic Development agency. I have been able to turn our company around from near bankruptcy to debt free and profitable. I owe it all the the amazing mentors I’ve had along the way over the last 13 years. They hold me accountable to myself and my goals and help me keep going during the dark times. In addition they celebrate the good times as well with you - I feel like I have my own cheering support team - something that is really important when you are a solopreneur.

Another approach to getting a business mentor is through special programs organized by organizations that support small business owners and entrepreneurs. They usually offer these mentee-mentor matches through an application process whereby as the mentee you share your desired objectives. Depending on the program, there may a limited time intake annually and it's often cohort based so that in addition to having regular meetings with your mentor you will also benefit from a few group activities and several other resources throughout the engagement. Where to start? 1) Ask the organizations you belong to if they have a mentorship program. 2) Seek out and join new organizations with such programs.

Remember that as your business evolves, your mentoring needs may change, and it's perfectly acceptable to seek out additional mentors or advisors.

In my experience, it is tough to beat the mentorship fostered in peer to peer advisory groups. There are several options, all with their unique attributes and methodology. It’s always an advantage to learn from others who have been in certain situations. Speakers on business topics can help generate good ideas as well.

For me, the key is to understand: A) Where your business is right now. - Can you afford help, (There are several free resources and accelerator programmes available to business owners) - have you done everything that you know that you can do yourself before asking for help B) What does your business need? - Are you stable, in free fall, or trying to scale - Do you have a roadmap in place - What do you want from a mentor? (You have to know this to enable measurement of success) I like this question, feel free to message me if you have any questions.
