First, identify the people that have the qualities of a mentor as candidates. You want to avoid the narcissistic, toxic psychopaths who have managed to rise in an organization but ultimately do little to nothing to advance or help others. Look to folks who have teams that love working for them and who are known to execute and get things accomplished. Then start a conversation with that person. Asking questions about them, their work, and projects their teams have accomplished are wonderful icebreakers. From there you can have an organic, flowing conversation and work in questions you have about your own career planning. Most folks want to help other people and will respond positively when asked for advice. That's the start.

Having a rough idea of what it is you want to accomplish in your own career is helpful and will result in more fulsome conversations when you are asking someone for advice. If you see someone (Amanda, let's call her) doing a job or filling a role that you think you'd like to pursue, use that person as an example and ask them, or their boss, or someone who would know, "How do I get to be like Amanda?" I'm a big fan of going directly to Amanda and saying, "From my perspective, watching what you do here seems like a pretty awesome job. If I wanted to get to where you are, what advice would you give me?" I'm hard pressed to believe anyone with a trace of humanity within them would be happy to sit down and talk to you about it.

A few items I'll just bullet point to make it an easy list per the mentor/mentee relationship. * Ask for advice, then actually listen and learn. Take notes. * Follow up when you act on pieces of advice you've been given; say that you tried it out and it worked and say thank you. That goes a LONG way towards getting help from that person in the future. * Look for folks who are 5 to 10 years ahead of you. While their specifics may differ, a large portion of your future path looks a lot like the view from their rearview mirror. Use that to help you avoid major missteps, mistakes, and avoidable pain points. * Subjugate your ego and listen to constructive criticism. You can always improve. * Compliment people per their strengths.
