What do you do if you're a recent graduate trying to shine in a cutthroat Engineering Management job market?

Early in your engineering career, I believe it is important to create your technical foundation. This foundation will provide authenticity to your future leadership positions. In addition, it provides a “back-stop” for hiccups in your career journey and therefore enhances your confidence and ability to explore and take risks. I believe a strong technical foundation is critical for future leadership opportunities.

Be a good engineer first! Learn how to communicate effectively with others. Learn Finance and become bilingual by properly translating between engineering projects and bean counters. Develop people skills if you lack them. Continue your engineering learning and your financial learning. Get a master′s if you wish, that may catapult you to management positions.

Approach networking with authenticity, sincerity, and professionalism. Be genuine in your interactions, listen actively, and demonstrate respect and empathy towards your contacts. Building trust and rapport is essential for fostering long-term relationships. Be open to receiving feedback from your network on your professional goals, aspirations, and areas for improvement. Likewise, provide constructive feedback and support to your contacts when appropriate, fostering a culture of reciprocity and mutual growth. By networking smartly and strategically, you can expand your professional connections, access valuable resources and opportunities, and accelerate your career progression in the field of Engineering Management.

You'll never get a software engineering manager job straight out of any degree program! Unless you got a MS or MBA in Software Engineering Management, your degree needs to be combined with 1-2+ years of experience as an engineering manager in order to qualify for these positions. So how do you get that experience? It's the same as any other software engineering job -- no matter how many degrees you have (with the exception of a PhD in AI during the current AI gold rush), you're going to have to take a crappy job (or freelance) for at least 6 months. Then, to reach engineering management, you need to work your way up to a leadership position (senior, staff, or lead software engineer). After, start asking to get promoted to management. ?

One thing no one can take away from you is the experience you get from Projects or work you do. So keep on building that knowledge and experience.

Real-world experience is invaluable. If direct job opportunities are scarce, consider internships, co-ops, or volunteer work related to Engineering Management. These positions can provide hands-on experience and make your resume stand out. They also offer a chance to demonstrate your skills in a practical setting and can lead to full-time job offers. Ensure that you are doing everything within your power to show off your skills. A website, a good CV, pet projects, other thoughts. You need to show a creative burst to give confidence that you can understand the basics.

Embrace Leadership over Management. Management is what you do when you fail at leadership and Titles don't mean anything. Developing a reputation for Technical competence, hard work and honesty are the foundation of being an effective leader as your team will know that you are ready, willing and able to step in an help them. If you can't do (or at least understand) their job - how do you help them grow? Conversely, if you develop a reputation for self serving behavior to advance your own career..... people won't trust you and this will ultimately lead to your career demise.

When you are recent graduate the most important thing to shine is your attitude. Embrace a mindset geared towards rapidly absorbing knowledge from every direction. Be prepared to say "yes" to all challenges that come your way. This openness and eagerness to learn will reward you with invaluable experiences and insights, setting the foundation for a successful career.

Developing a personal brand is essential in Engineering Management. Your brand should reflect your professional identity and values, showcasing your expertise in the field. This online presence can attract recruiters and hiring managers seeking proactive candidates for their teams.

With the growth of AI to automatically generate resume and apply to jobs, looking great on paper will become the norm. What you need is peer recognition, not self-promotion. Having an online presence and develop a brand are not useful in themselves. But what you want is to become valuable and then be recognized for it. How do you become valuable? Know what you’re strong at, become better at it, share what you know and help others with it. It’s not for everyone, and most EMs don’t do it - so it’s not a requirement. But if you do it, be authentic - and ask those you help to share their praise publicly.

Research the company culture and values to ensure alignment with your own principles and work style. During the interview, emphasize how your values complement those of the organization, showcasing your potential as a cultural fit and a long-term asset to the team.

Know your own strength and weakness. Deep dive on the job profile and understand the roles / responsibilities of the job. Research on the company's Brand, work culture and domain. Work on the behavioral interviews in STAR format( Situation / Task / Action / Result.

Many older seasoned engineers are not committed to mentoring and helping younger engineers because they feel the journey taken by the younger ones is easier. But always remain positive. Time and hardwork will always prevail so daily positive approach to your work will benefit you in the long run

Networking is key in today’s job market. Attend industry events, connect with professionals on LinkedIn, and participate in online forums and communities related to your field. Building genuine relationships can open doors to opportunities that may not be advertised publicly.

No organization is perfect, and you’ll never know everything that went into strategic decisions. As a manager you’ll need to accept that sometimes you need to promote and champion things you don’t necessarily believe in or see the point of. That’s not saying you should be a lemming that follows whatever comes from the top; but your team will look up to you to know how to respond to changes. So your best approach is to assume the best of others. Maybe there’s some goal or constraint that you don’t know about, and being positive is believing in these good intentions. Change is scary, and being defensive is a natural human reaction; so it will take deliberate efforts to overcome.

Consider further education: While not always necessary, pursuing a master's degree in engineering management, business administration, or a related field can enhance your knowledge and credentials, making you a more competitive candidate.

I am surprised that hard work is not on this list. I get asked all the time by team members how performance is measured, and my answer is always: ‘get sh** done.’ Your only ‘personal brand’ is that you deliver results for your client, your employer, and coworkers.

Take time to nurture your own growth and well-being amidst the job search journey. Celebrate your achievements, learn from setbacks, and trust in your ability to navigate through challenges. Start your own business or find another company that is not cutthroat. You will become one of cutthroats if that is the culture and you want to thrive in it. There are plenty of jobs for good engineers. Move on but, before you resign have your next job in the bag.

"Cutthroat Engineering Management job market?" ??? If I felt something was truly "cutthroat", I would look for a new line of work. That being said, I have never found Engineering management to be "cutthroat". The demand is high and the entry ticket is a substantial hurdle of education and skills developed over time, with considerable investment. It is extremely difficult for someone to compete only if they have not paid the price of admission.
